Cadott handed first defeat as offense was shut down

Cadott’s football program was in action, at home, Sept. 12, facing off with Lakeland Conference foe Grantsburg, on a rain-filled night. The Hornets went into the match with a 3-0 record, but Grantsburg was determined to change that and change that they did.

By the end of the match-up, Cadott was unable to put any points on the board and the Pirates went home with a 36-0 shutout victory.

“They pretty much shut us down on offense, Friday night,” said coach Todd Rykal. “The rain did not help, as we turned a little too one dimensional, but we will have to figure out how to do better, when the ball is slick.”

On offense, sophomore Kellen Blanchette had 10 carries, for 34 yards, while senior Aiden Rykal had 13 carries, for 2 yards, and sophomore Jake Weeks ended the night with 22 yards. Weeks also went 1-6 in passing, with an interception, and junior Brenton Faber came up with 7 yards from an interception.

Defensively, A. Rykal and junior Owen Fasbender had 11 tackles each, with Fasbender getting a sack, and junior Brock Webster finishing with 8 tackles and 3 sacks. Sophomore Max Davis and freshman Max Schneider each had 6 tackles, while junior Chapman Eslinger added 2 tackles and a sack.

“I thought we played a lot better than the score shows,” said T. Rykal. “They scored on a number of deep passes and screen plays, but we played their run tough. We just couldn’t get the momentum to swing in our direction on key plays.”
