‘Discovery Walk’ planned for May 31

This year’s “Discovery Walk” will offer a walk down memory lane. The event will be held at the Kids Group Hall, (Clark Street) next to the museum in downtown Spencer on Saturday, May 31, with the Spencer Area Historical Society.

Beginning promptly at 1 p.m. recognition will be given to each of the following: Art Boock, Harold Kuethe, Florence Misek, and Frank Oelrich, along with Chancey and Amanda Richardson.

“Come listen and learn about your area history!” wrote Sharon Kobs in a press release.

History of the Discovery Walk The 2019 event was held at the West Spencer Cemetery. Five pioneer stories were shared: Ina Damon, Spencer E. Graves, John K. Hayward, Samuel H. Pickett, and Susan Ring.

The walk was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID –19.

The 2021 event was again at the West Spencer Cemetery and featured Ritzpah Crowell, Lawrence Driscoll, Guy Ingham, Charles Stoltenow, and Ward and Wesley Vanderhoof.

In 2022 walkers gathered at the Lutheran cemetery on State Highway 13 and heard the stories of Maurice Anderson, William Kobs, Ken Neumann, Francis Parrett, and Herbert Wacholz.

In the year 2023, Arnold Bruesewitz, Donald and Silveria Drews, Mike Engel, Edwin Heath, and William Reinheimer, Sr. wererecognizedattheWestSpencerCemetery.

In 2024, the weather was cold and rainy and the group moved to the Kids Group Hall to share stories of Robert and Mary Endreas, Bruno and Marichen Fuhrman, Alvah (Brownie) and Agnes Messer, Agnes Pickett, Hazel Rohloff, and Adolph Wendell.

All in attendance appreciated the event held indoors and the group decided it would be best for mobility concerns (walking on uneven ground) and weather conditions to continue holding it at the Kids Group Hall.

“We also heard from many area residents that always holding it on Memorial Day weekend made it difficult for them to attend, so we are presenting this year on a different weekend,” wrote Kobs.

All are welcome to attend this time of learning and sharing local history.
