Steven J. Berrett, age 62, of Callawassie Island, S.C., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025, after battling ALS with remarkable courage and grace.

Steven James Berrett was born on Feb. 4, 1963, in Pasadena, Calif., the eldest of four brothers: Steve, Bob, Dean, and Doug; and the son of James and Karen. His professional life took many paths, but his true grit was an extraordinary way with plants. Steve could identify nearly any species on sight, revive anything struggling, and transform spaces into such tropical paradises filled with palms, orchids, and an abundance of vibrant flowers. Those who knew him recognized his touch in every thriving landscape, including one of the major gardens he personally designed at the Naples Botanical Garden. Visiting his homes in Puerto Vallarta, Naples, or St. Petersburg revealed his passion and magnificent talent for creating beauty.

Steve and his husband, Scott, had recently moved to Callawassie Island and built a home together of which they were immensely proud. When Scott died unexpectedly on Sept. 3, 2025, Steve was determined to join in Scott’s celebration of life on Nov. 9, 2025. Despite his failing health, he was there, surrounded by loved ones. Simply being present with family and friends brought him tremendous joy. Those who knew Steve will remember his warmth, his generous spirit, the many cherished friendships he built over the years, and yes, his affection for an overabundance of perfectly arranged pillows.

Steve is survived by his father, James; his brothers: Bob (Kate), Dean (Dale), and Doug (Ingrid); his nieces and nephews: Jenna, Justin (Karen), Geneva, Kaylyn (Steven), Benjamin, Ellie, Nicholas (Maegan), Lisa (Jonathan), Jessica, Griffen, and Max (Courtney); Scott’s siblings: Kevin (Gisela), Darren (Katie), and Kim (Dale); and his faithful foot warmer, Milo.

In addition to Scott, Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Karen, and their beloved dog, Georgie.

Blessings of Steve’s ashes will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Greenwood, with a memorial Mass held at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 17, at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to ALS research organizations or consider planting something beautiful — Steve would know exactly what it needs to thrive.
