Holcombe’s Dust Bowl won’t be around long

By Ginna Young

Many have likened the conditions along West Lakeshore Drive in Holcombe, to that of the infamous Dust Bowl, which plagued the prairie states in the 1930s. However, those conditions were caused by extreme drought and windy conditions, not road construction, as is the case on Lakeshore Drive.

“We have never had so many complaints about fixing a road,” said Lake Holcombe Town chairman Brian Guthman. “Hopefully, it will rain, like it usually does in May.”

A number of weeks ago, that stretch of road was pulvarized and gravel laid over it, waiting for traffic to pack it down enough to pave the road. Since then, dust has been raised each time a vehicle passes on the still settling roadway.

“We did the work before Memorial Day, so it could be done by the 4th of July,” said Guthman.

Either way, businesses and homes along Lakeshore see a lot of traffic, as well as the Wayside Park for swimming, fishing and picnics. While the dust has been something more than a nuisance for residents, unlike the 1930s Dust Bowl, Holcombe’s dusty conditions won’t last for much longer.

“The plan is to do final grade and then pave it the week of June 6,” said Guthman.
