New policy really isn’t that new to district

The Cornell School District acheived exemplary reading outcomes in 2024, for “Standout Schools” recognition, as announced by WI Reads. Because of the teachers’ and staff’s dedication, it makes the acquisition of reading proficiency possible for many students. Submitted Photo

A new policy is up for approval at the Cornell School District, as legislature is requiring schools to pass students from fourth grade to fifth. That’s nothing new for Cornell, as they evaluate each student in each grade, to see if they’re ready to move on.
If staff thinks there is not enough improvement from the start of the year, to the end, the parents are brought in to discuss holding their child back. That could be for emotional, social or educational growth.
“We have retained kids in other grades, all the way up to middle school,” said superintendent Paul Schley, May 19, at the board of education meeting. “So, this policy really fits what we’ve been doing anyway.”
That was only the first reading of Policy 5.013: Fourth-Grade Promotion, with it to be approved at the next meeting.
The board also looked at the first reading of revised Policy 9.02: HASB 34 Capitalzation.
In addition, members approved the hire of head girls basketball coach Krista Keever.
