Marathon Homecoming
This week has been designated as Homecoming week at Marathon High School. On Friday the Homecoming Parade will start at 2:15 and Red and White Day will be observed. The Homecoming game is against the Athens Blue Jays with the dance following immediately after the game.
Cub Scout Pack News
At the recent Cub Scout Pack 688 meeting at St. Joseph’s Hall, it was announced the new Webelo leader is Dan Johnson, a member of the public school faculty. At present, Mrs. Al Becher is the only den mother. Three more den mothers are needed.
Marathon Wins Volleyball Game
At the opening night for the girls Tiger volleyball team, they were turned loose on the Marathon Red Raiders. The varisty team battled in four long, hard, pressure packed games. Marathon grabbed the first, third and fourth games. Coaching the girls is Mrs. June Nichols. STRATFORD JOURNAL

Alice in Dairyland to visit SHS
Roxanne Westphal, Wisconsin’s 53rd Alice in Dairyland, is scheduled to visit the Stratford Agricultural Education Department. Westphal will talk to agricultural classes about her duties as “Alice”, career opportunities in agriculture, promoting Wisconsin’s agricultural products, and the future of the agricultural industry.
VFW Auxiliary reports
The Ladies Auxiliary to Stratford Memorial Post 6352 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars met at the home of member Inez Kann. A report on the National Convention that was recently held in Milwaukee was given by members who attended. The Charter will be draped for 30 days in memory of past department president, Lorinda Tessar.

Auxiliary New Officers
New officers of the Marathon American Legion Auxiliary are Theresa Szmanyski, president, Lou Ann Seliger, first vice president, Donna Hack, second vice president, Lia Klumpyan, secretary, Ruth Franke, corresponding secretary, Marilyn Braunel, treasurer, Janice Buchberger, chaplain, Grace Menzner, historian, and Betty Ford, sergeant at arms.
Wagon Fire
Edgar firemen were called Wednesday evening to the Roney Skrzypchak farm, Route 2, Edgar where his wagon loaded with straw was on fire. It was one of three calls received by the department during the past week.
Bank of Athens wins playoff
The Bank of Athens downed Wagners Dairy Treet 4-0 to capture the championship in the Athens Sunday night couples slo-pitch league. Team members are: Kathy Connor, Doreen Weise, Bev Boris, Sue Ewan, Larry Connor, Captain Eugene Weise, Butch Boris, Butch Ewan, Carlon Pepke, Frank, Nila and Sandy Koeller and Arlon and Darlene Balz.

Local heroes
Adam Murkowski, Brenda Blume and BoKaye Carriveau, all Safety Patrol students at St. Mary’s School, Marathon, received congratulatory plaques for their efforts to help an elderly woman who fell and hit her head while crossing Market Street on her way to church. The students removed the woman from the street out of the way of traffic and summoned the Marathon First Responders who called for an ambulance.
Foreign exchange students
Athens High School is hosting three foreign exchange students this school year. Dennis Eriksson, a native of Sweden, is staying at the home of Tom and Betsy Weiler. Yassin Labyed, a native of Morocco is also staying with the Weiler family. The third student is Volodymyr Blagun who hails from Ukraine.
The Shack won this year’s annual Old Timer’s softball tournament sponsored by the Stratford Area Chamber of Commerce.

Hungry St. John’s Catholic Church parishioners in Edgar feasted on a charcoal chicken dinner in the church cafeteria. Over 500 dinners were sold as well as raffle tickets with proceeds going toward the parish.
