Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on Sept. 11 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Two games of Sheepshead were played. Norbert Lake won first place and Steve Klockziem came in second in the first game. Wil Strack won first and Andy Hoef came in second in the second game.
Low score was Pat Frank. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Trailhead ribbon-cutting
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, for the new CTH M trail extension of the Odyssey Trail System. The ceremony will take place at a newly erected trailhead sign in the parking lot on the northwest corner of the school property. Weiler birth
A son, Matthew Foster Weiler, was born to Dylan and Sabrina Weiler, Wausau, on Sept. 5, 2025, at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau. He weighed seven pounds and was 19.5 inches long.
Maple Grove School
The Aug. 11 meeting of the Maple Grove Charter School Governance Board was called to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Minutes of the June 2025 meeting were approved. Mike F. made a motion made and it was seconded by Rebecca. The Record-Review article for June 2025 was approved. Motion made by Rebecca and seconded by Mike. Robin H. gave a shout-out to the maintenance crew for all the hard work over the summer and for getting all the projects done.
The board worked on the bylaws and the contract. Sections 8 and 10 will be left as is, and a few changes were made to Section 9. Ashley Lange will look at section 11 for the September meeting.
Grant update: the playground has been completed and a grand opening was held on Aug. 28. The generator will be hooked up before school starts. The electricity to the shed and the coop will power up efficiently. Six new cafeteria tables have been ordered. Outdoor adventures Sandy will have 12 days left.
Mike F. has been working on fundraising.
Kelly H. talked about the retreat for the board. The board will keep working on the bylaws and the contracts needed for marketing and fundraising. The idea of a student of the month was also brought up.
Staffing update: new 5th grade teacher is Chistine Zarins and head of maintenance is Jon Heier. The rest of the positions will be approved by the board on Aug. 18.
New officers are as follows: president Kelly H., vice-president Rebecca Primm, secretary Ashley Lange. Treasurer will be voted on at the next meeting.
CESA 10 did an assessment audit and is working on the maintenance part now.
PTO will continue to support the teachers and will fund the school forest field trips. The calendar fundraiser went well, and apparel will be available in September.
The Maple Grove Foundation will continue the popcorn days and will make sure that the company that painted the school be contacted for touch ups before the year is up.
Toddler Time
Tots ages 2 and under are invited to an interactive, 20-minute story time designed just for them at the Athens Branch Library. The event will begin with a quick introduction, and then library staff will mix together fun stories, songs, rhymes and finger plays. Toddler Time is a great opportunity for parents and children to learn and bond together. The next Toddler Time will be Wednesday, Sept 17, from 10:30 to 10:50 a.m.. Preschool Story Time
Bring your little ones, ages 3 to 5, to Preschool Story Time at the Athens Branch Library for funfilled stories and adventures. Library staff will build their imaginations through books, rhymes, music and interactive activities. Pasture walk
The Cloverbelt Grazing Community will host a sheep grazing pasture walk on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Half Moon Hill, 132851 CTH A, Athens. Gerrid and Sadie Franke are in their 16th year of grazing sheep. They graze 25 ewes with lambs on 21 acres of pasture. After starting their farm completely from scratch, they have a sheep operation that works for them, although they still get surprises to learn from every year. They graze long, leaving a lot of matter on the field, which has its own challenges. Join the walk to hear about the lessons they’ve learned. Topics will include pasture management, fencing, water systems for sheep, and flock management. This is a free event; all are welcome (kids too). Cookies and refreshments will be provided.
Bingo at St. Stephen
St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 424 N. Third Ave., Edgar, will host bingo in the church basement on Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be served. If you need a ride or have questions, call Mark at 715-3485802 or Colleen at 715-571-8277.
Women’s Club
The Edgar Women’s Club met on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Edgar Village Hall. Twelve members and three guests enjoyed a potluck supper.
Theresa Kramer, outgoing president, installed the new officers: Judy Berg as secretary, Alisa Kramer as vice president and Terri Steinke as president.
Booklets for the new year of meeting dates and projects were reviewed by the club. Librarian Hannah Delaff explained the activities at the library for the month of October.
The traveling prize was won by Bev Stencil. Door prizes were won by Bev Stencil, Julie Reichenbach, Judy Berg and Barb Christiansen.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Edgar Village Hall.
New members are welcome.
Family Game Night
All ages are invited to Edgar Branch Library for a Family Game Night on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. A variety of board games and card games will be available to play, and participants are invited to bring their own. American Legion cookout
The Edgar American Legion will host a Veterans Cookout for all area veterans on Saturday, Sep. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oak Street Park in Edgar. There is no cost for this event, which will feature a guest speaker from Never Forgotten Honor Flight as well as benefit information for various programs available to veterans.
