Cornell takes out Warriors to add to their win column

By Ginna Young

In their only game of the week, the Cornell Chiefs waited to face Winter at home Feb. 10, for an East Lakeland Conference girls basketball battle.

“The girls came to play,” said coach Courtney Yanko. “We knew this was going to be a tough battle against Winter.”

Defensively, Cornell got big stops against Winter’s shooters, with Yanko saying the Chiefs really came together and worked as a team.

“Offensively, we have been struggling a lot of the season, but tonight, we really worked together as a team, passed the ball well, we found gaps on the court and we shot the ball well,” said Yanko.

At the end of the night, the score sat at 52-36 in favor of Cornell, bringing the Chiefs’ record to 3-17 overall and 2-9 in league play.

“Overall as a team, we had 10, three-pointers between five of our girls, and I could see the confidence of the girls build and build as the game went on,” said Yanko.

Sophomore Grace Harycki led for the team, with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Junior Kelsea Popp followed that up with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist, while sophomore Marcella Boehm ended with 7 points and 3 rebounds.

Senior Teaira Spaeth and freshman Alyssa Bowe each had 6 points, and an assist, with Spaeth garnering 10 rebounds and Bowe coming up with 6. Freshman Bralee Schroeder recorded 3 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist.

Sophomores Lauren Samardzich and Makya Hetherington each had 4 rebounds, and sophomore Teryn Close finished with 1.

“It was fun and the girls are really showing what they are truly made of on the basketball court,” said Yanko.
