Greta Breiby Greta Breiby

Greta Breiby, 86, Cornell, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 1, in the comfort of her daughter’s home in Bloomer, surrounded by those she loved.

Greta was born June 30, 1939, to Norbert and Gladys Bollenbach.

She carried a quiet strength and warmth, that touched everyone she knew. Greta spent her life in Wisconsin, living in Madison, Holcombe and Cornell, places that became home not only to her, but to the many memories she created, with family and friends.

She graduated from Madison East High School. Greta married Donald Breiby, Oct. 19, 1957, in Madison. Though they later went their separate ways, that chapter of her life helped shape the family she loved so deeply.

She went on to earn her associate’s degree, as a legal secretary, and worked at the Hoel Law Office in Cornell. Later, she brought her love of people to the restaurant business, where she enjoyed both serving others and visiting with those around her.

Greta will be remembered for her kindness to shut-ins, her love of animals and her unending devotion to quilting. She had a gift for honesty and was known for speaking her mind, in a way that was both genuine and often quietly amusing.

She also gave her time, as a volunteer, at the Bloomer Elementary School, where she supported teachers and encouraged younger students with their reading, and even served as a mentor. Her devotion as a mom and grandma shone brightly, even hopping into a go-kart, at Action City, last summer, so all of her great-grandchildren could ride!

Her presence brought comfort and her legacy lives on in the lives of those she touched.

She is survived by her daughter – Jill Begalke, Bloomer; her son – Jay Breiby, Peyton, Colo.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her brother – Robert Bollenbach, Bolingbrook, Ill.; and daughter-in-law – Kathy Breiby of Gilbert, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents – Norbert and Gladys Bollenbach; and her son – John Breiby.

She will be deeply missed and forever cherished. The family extends their sincere gratitude to Courtney, Nicole and the entire St. Croix Hospice team, for their compassionate care.

A memorial service is at 11 a.m., Friday, June 5, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cornell, with Pastor Ron Gerl officiating. A luncheon follows the service.
