It is with deep sadness, that we announce the passing of Barbara “Barb” Jean (Stewart) Nelson, Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, unexpectedly, at her home in Cornell.

Barb was born July 22, 1947, to Roy William Stewart and Esther Albertina (Holter) Stewart, in Bruce, S.D.

She met and married her husband of 51 years, James Nelson, in Estelline, S.D., Aug. 16, 1969. After the marriage, Barb and James resided, and worked their entire life, on James’ family farm in Holcombe.

Barb found joy in the simple pleasures, such as crocheting, knitting, gardening and preparing baked goods for her family, friends and church. Barb is remembered for her caring nature and infectious happiness. Her kindness and generosity touched the hearts of many. She was also a lifetime member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cornell.

She is survived by her sisters – Corrine Fenske, Brookings, S.D., Donna (David) Kainz, Bloomer, Nancy (Doug) Thompson, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Susan (Harlan) Feldhus, Bruce, S.D.; sisters-in-law – Debbie Stewart, Brooking, S.D., and Mildred Andazola, Sacramento, Calif.; numerous cousins; nieces and nephews; special niece – Dawn and her husband Jeff; and her close friend – Tom Stewart.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband- – James Nelson; her parents – Roy and Esther Stewart; sister – Caroline Engberg; brother – David Stewart; and brothers-in-law – Robert Fenske, Leo Engberg and Daniel Andazola.

Barb leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and joy. She will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 16, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cornell. The visitation will begin at noon, until the start of service, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Cornell Cemetery.
