Roland G. Kulig, 86, Independence, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at the Grandview Care Center in Blair, under the care of St. Croix Hospice.

Roland was born on the farm, Feb. 22, 1937, to William and Julia (Kwosek) Kulig.

He attended schools in Independence, into high school, until a fire destroyed their family’s home and Roland then stayed on the farm to work full-time. Shortly after school, he worked briefly in Chicago, Ill., before returning home, to work back on the farm.

Roland met the love of his life, Doris Siverling, and the couple was united in marriage Sept. 28, 1963, at the Drywood Catholic Church, rural Cadott. Together, the couple was blessed with 60 years of marriage, and raised six children on the farm.

In his spare time, Roland enjoyed fishing, bowling, going to numerous tractor pulls, area auctions, and various sporting events to watch his children and grandchildren. He traveled many miles, in all types of weather, to show support to his family and loved going on baseball trips.

Roland was a member of S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and will always be remembered for his strong faith and devotion to his family.

He is survived by his loving wife – Doris; children – Scott (Sherry Rose), Independence, Brenda (Dean) Suchla, Whitehall, Todd (Amy), Independence, Cindy (Dennis) Suchla, Independence, Terri (Paul) Tuschner, Independence, and Cory (Maria), Strum; 14 grandchildren – Josh (Shaylyn Appleman) Kulig, Jamie (Sam) Kulig, Aaron (Stephanie) Suchla, Kyle (Sam Ceranski) Suchla, Nathan Suchla, Jordan Suchla, Hayden Kulig, Dylan Suchla, Erika (Alex Scott) Suchla, Kaitlynn (Nick Koval) Tuschner, Lynnsey Tuschner, Aliza, Cashton and Anna Kulig; four great-grandchildren – Aaron, Ellie, Isaiah and Anayiah; special niece, who spent a lot of time on the farm – Joy Girard, and family; sisters – Renita (Art) Bohn and Ruthie (friend, Gordy) Marsolek; sister-in-law – Rosetta (Richard) Nesvacil; and brothers-in-law – Raymond (Theresa) Siverling and Delmar (Charlotte) Siverling.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers – Richard Kulig and Robert, in infancy; sister – Rosemary (Ben) Sosalla; half-brothers – Ben (Ruth), Adolph, Clifford, Roman (Frances) Kwosek, Clarence (Theresa), Anton (Doris), Edward (Arlene) and William, in infancy; half-sisters – Eleanore (Art) Drangstveit, Verna (Aloysie) Halama and Adeline (Joseph) Puccini; brothers-in-law – Martin Marsolek, Norman (Edna) Siverling and Willis Pischke.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with Father George Thayilkuzhitottu officiating. Family and friends are welcome for visitation, beginning at 10 a.m., prior to the service at church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
