Michael P. Schmitt, 78, Stetsonville, passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, 2023, at his home.

Michael was born March 21, 1945, to Virgel and Lucille (Wingad) Schmitt, in Chippewa

Falls. He graduated from Thorp High School and continued his education at NTC in Wausau, where he earned his associate’s degree in accounting.

Michael then went to work as an accountant for Peterson Construction, in the mid-1960s. He worked there for 40 plus years, until his retirement. He was also an accountant for a local logging firm and St. Vincent de Paul/ Circle of Faith. He also drove school bus for Krug’s Bus Service for 20 plus years.

He married Constance “Connie” Hartman, Oct. 21 1977, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church; she preceded him in death, Nov. 25, 2021.

Michael’s faith was very important to him. He was an active and involved member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed camping and was a member of the Black River Rambler Camping Club, an avid car enthusiast. In his younger years, he enjoyed snowmobiling and curling. He loved to hunt deer in Phillips, with his family.

Michael will be remembered for his sense of humor. He is survived by his children – Mark Hartman, McFarland, Audrey Peterson, St. Charles, Mo., Judy (Pat) Vetterkind, Stetsonville, James Hartman, Florissant, Mo., and Dean (Heidi) Hartman, Wisconsin Rapids; grandchildren – Jenny (Steve) Rowlett, O’Fallon, Mo., Joshua (fiancée Catherine Africano) Peterson, St. Peters, Mo., Lisa (Clint) Suchomel, Wisconsin Rapids, Christopher Matthias, Wausau, John Hartman, Springfield, Ohio, and Joshua (Jessi) Hartman, Buckeye, Ariz.; great-grandchildren – Jordan Rowlett, Grace Peterson, Scarlett Hartman, and Mia and Westley Africano; siblings – Thomas (Barbara) Schmitt, Eau Claire, Dan Schmitt, Cadott, Patrick (Linda) Schmitt, Eau Claire, Jonas (Glenda) Schmitt, Janesville, and Kathleen (Lyle) Bourget, Two Rivers; and nieces; nephews; and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife – Connie; son-in-law – Mark Peterson; and sister-in-law – Carol Schmitt.

A funeral mass for Michael took place at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 10, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Father Patrick McConnell officiating. Burial followed at the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation took place at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Friday, Nov. 10, from 9:30 a.m., until the time of service, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Michael’s name may be given to Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
