Wilfred “Baldy” Marvin Hakes was ….

Wilfred “Baldy” Marvin Hakes was born to Charles Hakes and Bertha Guite Hakes June 2, 1926, in Cornell, and passed away April 27, 2023.

During World War II, Baldy was a member of a transportation corp harbor craft company, performing occupation duties in Japan. While serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, he received Victory and Good Conduct Medals, as well as an Army of Occupation Ribbon.

He was honorably discharged in November 1946.

Baldy married Virginia Herrick July 12, 1947, in Chippewa Falls, shortly after he returned from World War II. Baldy and Virginia moved to Cornell, after their marriage and remained there until October 2021, at which time, they moved to the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Chippewa Falls.

He worked for several different companies that owned the paper mill in Cornell, until his retirement in 1991. After his retirement, he continued to remain busy with multiple projects in his garage, as well as becoming very active in the American Legion.

Baldy particularly enjoyed selling tickets for the annual fundraiser for the Legion.

He is survived by his wife; children – Dennis (Terry), Kay Doll (Jim) and David (Carol); seven grandchildren – Larry, Brian, Terry, Ashley, Evan, Curt Hakes and Matt Doll; and four great-grandchildren – Landon, Ian, Mazyn Hakes and Hailey Doll.

He was preceded in death by a son – Terry; his parents; sister – Irma; and brothers – Cecil, Russell and John.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 3, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cornell, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Cornell Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Cornell American Legion, immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or the Cornell American Legion.
