Herbert “Herb” Richard LaRose, 88, Cadott, passed away Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, at Cornell Health Services, surrounded by his loving family.

Herb was born March 25, 1934, in Chippewa County, to Alfred and Gerturde (Pierce) Jacobson.

He grew up on a farm on the Yellow River in Bateman, located in the Town of Lafayette. He attended and celebrated his eighth-grade graduation from a country school in Bateman.

Herbert enlisted in the Navy in 1955, and worked as a jet mechanic on the USS Randolph. He was active in the Navy for four years.

He met Lillian Hakes, of Cadott, in 1957. They got married May 30, 1959, and would have celebrated 65 years of marriage next year.

They moved to Dixon, Calif., in 1961, where he drove a semi for a meat processing plant. They moved back to Cadott, in 1964, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of buying a farm and becoming a farmer.

Herb farmed for over 40 years, and enjoyed helping his son, Dwayne, on the farm after his retirement. In addition to farming, he worked several other side jobs around the Cadott area, including the Lacina Sawmill, Hillside Dairy and Cloverleaf Farm Supply.

He loved being outdoors and tinkering in the shed. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He loved his family, and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Herb will be truly missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife – Lillian; his five children – Randy (Sheila) LaRose, Kathy (Tom) Paff, Dwayne (Kim) LaRose and Dana (Stacey) Marion, all of Cadott, and Carolyn (Joe) Melville, Boyd; his grandchildren – Jason (Kim) LaRose, Eric (Beth) LaRose, Mark LaRose, Tom Paff (Tanya), Danielle (David) Miller, Nick (Leanna) Paff, Devon Sterling (Retta), Austin Sterling (Elizabeth), Alex Melville, Quintin Melville, Hannah Melville, Rayan Hoff (Dennis), Justin (Jess) Marion, Michael Marion, Shawn Marion (Valeria) and Michael Roder; 11 great-grandchildren; brother – John Jacobson; sister – Pearl Crowley; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son – Larry; his parents; his stepdad – David Jacobson; sisters – Ethel, Cora and Betty; and brothers – Herman and James.

Services were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17, at Cadott United Methodist Church, with the Rev. George Olinske officiating. Burial was in the Bateman Cemetery.

Military honors were provided by the Cadott American Legion Post 159 and Cadott VFW Post 6005.

Friends called from 9-11 a.m., Friday, until the time of the service at 11 a.m., Friday, at the church.
