Gwendolyn “Gwen” L. Hakes, 89, passed away Monday, May 9, 2022, at North Shore Care Center.

Gwen was born Oct. 11, 1932, in Warrens, to Robert and Ora (Young) McGinnis.

She was the ninth child of 12 kids.

Gwen moved to Cornell, married Ken Hakes and had eight children.

She worked at Presto and the Cornell Area Care Center, as head cook.

Gwen loved traveling with her kids, sewing and crocheting baby blankets.

She is survived by one brother –Kermit McGinnis, Appleton; her children – Kathy (James) Dembinski, Donna (Paul) Scott, Tom (Mary) Hakes, Rick (Sonia) Hakes, Patricia (William) White and Randy (Sue) Hakes; daughter-in-law – Elaine Hakes; very special friends – Karl and Vicky; 19 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers – James, Raymond, Leonard, Elwyn, Ronald, Clayton and Adrian; sisters – Lucille and Erma; two sons – Kenneth Jr. and Timothy Hakes; son-in-law – John Dembinski; grandson – Chad Dembinski; great-grandson – Tyler Wojciuh; greatgreat- granddaughter – Gabriella Fugere; and one brother-inlaw – Chester Hakes.

Services are at Borton-Leiser Funeral Home in Cornell, with visitation Friday, May 13, from 5-8 p.m., and the service Saturday, May 14, from noon-1 p.m., at the Cornell Cemetery. Lunch will follow at the Legion hall.
