Helen Frieda Schoen
Helen Frieda Schoen, age 94, of Neillsville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Aug. 28, 2026.
Helen was born on Jan. 12, 1932, to Casper and Emma (Altemus) Marty. She attended Reed School in Neillsville and grew up with a love for animals and the outdoors.
Helen married the love of her life, Walter Schoen, on Nov. 25, 1950. Together, they raised seven children. They built their life through hard work, sacrifice, and a deep devotion to family. While raising their children, Helen sacrificed greatly to make sure her family had what they needed. She worked nights at Memorial Medical Center, spent long hours in the pickle patch and hog barn, and took on odd jobs, including waitressing, to help make ends meet. No matter how hard life became, her children always came first.
Helen lost Walter in 1996 following his struggle with diabetes. She faithfully cared for him throughout his illness and remained by his side until his final breath.
Helen loved gardening, baking, and crocheting. She was well known for her hearty vegetable plants, plentiful gardens, and delicious baked goods, which she generously shared. One of her most treasured traditions was crocheting baptismal gowns for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating keepsakes that will remain in the family for generations.
Above all, Helen’s greatest joy was her family. She helped raise many of her grandchildren and even some of her great-grandchildren. Grandma Schoen’s house was always a place to gather, find something to eat, and know you were welcome. Her door — and her heart — were always open.
Helen’s generosity extended far beyond her family. After retiring from Memorial Medical Center following 43 years of dedicated service, she continued caring for others by volunteering as a driver, helping elderly members of the community get to and from medical appointments. She continued this service for as long as she was able to drive, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping those around her.
Helen is survived by her children, Emilie (Denny) Fleischmann, Walter (Christy) Schoen, Karl (Xiuping) Schoen, Rodney (Renee) Schoen, Karlette Schoen (Chris), Dawn Moczynski (Ron), and Floyd (Debbie) Schoen; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Schoen; son-in-law, LeRoy Moczynski; grandsons, Roland Schoen, Curt Fleischmann, Joseph Schoen, and Tim Habert; great-grandchildren, Devon Fleischmann and Remy Schoen; brothers, Walter, Fred, Bill, Jesse, and Bob Marty; and sisters, Beth Sternitzky and Esther Hainzlsperger.
A memorial service for Helen will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Pastor Terry Marg will officiate. Interment will be in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 18, and from 10-11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Gesche Funeral Home.
