James “Jim” Helm

 

James R. “Jim” Helm, 94, Loyal, passed away on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, at the Clark County Rehabilitation & Living Center in Owen. Funeral services were held at 12 noon on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in take place in the parish cemetery at a later date. Visitation was held at the church, on Tuesday, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

James Robert Helm was born on Dec. 24, 1929, in Loyal,

raised and received his education in Loyal, where he graduated from Loyal High School. Jim was united in marriage to Delores R. Pieper on Oct. 26, 1949, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Loyal. He was a lifelong resident of Loyal, where he worked as the foreman for the Loyal Canning Company for many years, and then later owned and operated the House of Spirits liquor store. For a number of years, he was an alderman and served as mayor of Loyal.

In his retirement he enjoyed driving escort on highways for oversize semi-truck Jim was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church his whole life.

He is survived by his daughters: Sandra (Jeff) Sommers of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Shelly (Dennis) Stein of Appleton; four grandchildren: Craig (Kelly) Sommers, Chris (Kelli) Sommers, Kelsey (Adam) Kienert and Matthew Stein; four great-grandchildren: Malakai Sommers, Carey Sommers, Caley Sommers and Lyla Kienert; his special friend, Darlene Lucht; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delores, on Oct. 30,1971; one son, Randy, on Nov. 23,1998; one daughter, Sharon Fidler, on Jan. 30,2009; four sisters: Marie and Angeline Helm, Florence Christensen and Delores Adair; three brothers: Herbert, Arthur and Richard Helm; as well as his significant other of 25 years, Marie Shupe.
