Richard Carlberg

Richard H. Carlberg Jr., 73, Loyal, passed away on July 25, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minn.

He is survived by his wife, Sally; his sons, Eric (Beth) Carlberg and Michael (Sara) Hart; and his grandchildren, Oliver, Charles and Christina. He is further survived by his siblings: Anna Rueth, Aaron (Sue) Carlberg, Dorothy Roback and Debra (Brad) Rowe; and nieces and nephew: Mary Anne (Walt) Medlock, Jen (Chris) Carlberg-George, Travis Rueth, Shana (Dustin) Kind, Jesse Rowe and Breanna Rowe.

Richard was born in Valparaiso, Ind., on Feb. 15, 1950, to Richard Sr. and Irene Carlberg. Richard attended Boone Grove High School in Boone Grove, Ind., before enlisting in the Army. He served in Germany and Vietnam, where he was severely wounded by a landmine.

Richard married his wife, Sally, on May 19, 1977, in Valparaiso, Ind. They moved around the country throughout the 80s, and eventually settled in Wisconsin in 1987. Later in life, Richard would describe himself as a “truck driver with a serious farming habit.” He retired from driving in his mid-sixties.

A memorial will be held at noon on Oct. 21, 2023, at the American Legion Hall in Loyal, with lunch to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Wounded Warrior Project in Richard’s name.
