The Holcombe Area Veterans Memorial meeting started on a high note Jan. 26, as copies of the long-awaited DNR permits were passed around, for those in attendance to see.

“We want to put a sign board out there [at the site] that we can put those on,” said Jim Mataczynski, committee chairperson, adding other important information and even recognition of major donors, could be displayed on the board.

He says they are looking for someone who would be willing to make the sign board.

“We should have some kind of an area where we can show the community who is helping with the project,” said Mataczynski.

Committee member Dave Conrad also gave an update on the bronze emblem ordered for the center of the memorial star. Conrad heard back from the company the emblem was ordered through, that the order was delayed, but should be completed and shipped in late February.

Since the order was delayed, the company said they would ship the emblem all the way to Holcombe, instead of part way, with someone required to pick it up from Chippewa Falls, as was originally planned.

“So, that’s some good news,” said Conrad. Committee members MaryAnn Van Treese and Rhonda Mataczynski also reported the spaghetti dinner, hosted in December, was a great success, raising $1,655.

The Memorial Planning Committee will also have a table at the Lake Holcombe Alumni Tournament and a tent at the St. Patrick’s Day parade, to keep their name, and what they are working on, out in the community.

J. Mataczynski also says the committee will gladly accept volunteers for the various functions held throughout the year, even if the people are not veterans or do not want to attend the meetings.

The group is also starting a newsletter, to help keep the community updated on what is happening with the veterans memorial project.

“It’s going to be quarterly,” said Van Treese.

J. Mataczynski says the first newsletter is planned for Feb. 1, and will contain things like site updates, pictures, letters from the committee leadership, lists of upcoming events, and highlights of veterans and their stories.

“It’ll be like our website, however, a little more personal,” said J. Mataczynski.

The newsletter will be sent by email. Those who would like to get on the mailing list, should send their contact information to holcombeareaveteransmemorial@gmail. com. Paper copies of the newsletter will also be available for those who do not use internet, by contacting any member of the committee.
