Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on June 5 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. Norbert Lake won first place and Steve Klockziem came in second in the first game. Sally Stubbe won first and Rick Schaetzl came in second in the second game. Pat Frank won first and Tom Ellenbecker came in second in the second game.

Low score was Harold Wienke. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Dinner by the Gazebo

Friday Night Dinner by the Gazebo will be hosted June 13 by the Athens VFW Auxiliary. Serving will start at 5:30 p.m. and will go until the end of the concert. The menu will consist of hot ham and cheese sandwiches, chips, pickle, soda, water and pie In the event of rain, the dinner and concert will move to Memorial Park under the arena. Friday Night Dinner by the Gazebo is looking for people who would like to serve a picnic style dinner before the Old Timers Concerts. Call Jean at 715-257-7353 for information.

Athens VFW

The latest meeting of the Athens VFW was called to order by Commander Marv Reuter, with 15 members present.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said.

The guest was A J Zastrow, a Boy Scout who will be attending NYLT leadership training this summer in Sacramento, Calif. He has asked for the VFW’s financial support towards his trip. He is the grandson of VFW life member Elly Zastrow.

After discussion, a motion was approved to help fund his trip in the amount of $300.

A motion to purchase a parade fund raffle ticket for $50 was approved.

A motion was approved to donate $75 toward the Athens Fire and Ambulance annual golf event.

Ron Lavicka reported that the curtain in the Veterans Park shelter is completed. He said donations towards the curtain were received from the Athens Lions and Knights of Columbus.

Commander Reuter is ending his term as commander as of this meeting. A round of appreciation applause was given by all.

The next meeting be on Wednesday, July 2.

Attendance prizes were given to Pat David, Archie Becker and Marv Reuter.

The meeting adjourned.

VFW Auxiliary 8527

The May 27 meeting of the Athens VFW Auxiliary Post 8527 was held Athens Fire and Ambulance back room. It was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by president Ruth Weiler, with 10 members present After a dessert was served by Denise Sikorski, the opening prayer was read and the Salute to the Flag was said by all.

The secretary’s report was given and approved. General orders were read.

Members were reminded that June 27 is National PTSD Day.

The treasurer’s report was given and approved.

Discussion was held about doing a breakfast again like last year at the cafe for veterans in the end of July.

The first Dinner on the Square will be June 13. The post will also be taking suggested donations for a stained glass pictured donated by Marilyn Meyn.

The Sunshine Report was given by Cheryl Engel.

An active military flag was donated by Ruth Weiler, which was given to her by her son after it was flown in combat. The flag will be hung at Athens Community Hall with a designated plaque.

Gayle Mauer, past president, installed the new officers: Ruth Weiler, president; Gayle Mauer, senior vice president; Gloria Lavicka, junior vice president; Marilyn Meyn, secretary; Julie Ellenbecker, treasurer; Cheryl Engel, chaplain; Karen Weiler, conductress; Mel Daniels, guard; and trustees Becky Knab, Ceil Johnson, and Denise Sikorski.

The closing prayer was read, and the meeting adjourned.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 24. Becky Knab won the special prize.

Animal Acrobats

Discover how different animals move, learn to identify tracks, and even meet a few live animals like a snake and bearded dragon. DYI Kaleidoscope

School-aged children are invited to drop in at the Athens Branch Library to build their own kaleidoscope any time during open hours the week of June 23-28. Use simple materials like cardboard tubes, glitter, and beads to create a mesmerizing optical illusion. All supplies will be provided, no registration required. Composting class

Adults are invited to learn how to compost during a free class at the Marathon City Branch Library on Monday, June 23, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Janell Wehr, horticulture educator with Extension Marathon County, will present on soil texture, pH levels, the basics of fertilizing, and how to get started with composting. Composting is the process of taking organic materials such as yard clippings, food scraps, etc., and breaking them down into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to improve soil and plant health. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required by visiting our website or calling 715-261-7230.

College notes

Cameron Ford and Greta Mahler were named to the spring 2025 dean’s list at Ripon College. To qualify for the list, students must achieve a 3.40 grade point average or higher on a 4.00 scale and complete at least 12 credits of regular letter-graded work.
