Last week, Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) workers barricaded the curb ramps on Main Street/Highway 73 in Greenwood, with plans to remove and replace these curb ramps to bring them into ADAcompliance. Pedestrians will still be able to navigate throughout town. The curb ramps are currently scheduled to be complete by the third week of May.

“WisDOT has an ongoing statewide plan to bring existing curb ramps on state facilities into compliance with standards outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA).Acurbrampisaslopedconnection which provides access between a pedestrian route and a surface located above or below an adjacent curb. Curb ramps are built on all public roadway facilities to provide access for all pedestrians including those with physical disabilities.

“For WisDOT construction projects, staff evaluate sidewalk curb ramps at intersections in the project limits to verify they meet ADAcompliance when possible. Any curb ramps within the project not meeting ADAstandards – typically because of a lack of detectable warning fields (the bumps) or flares, level landing areas, longitudinal and cross slopes and curb ramp geometry – will be removed and replaced to ensure ADA compliance,” WisDOTNorthwestRegioncommunications manager Christena O’Brien explained in an email.

Milling of the street surface is scheduled to start the week of June 23. The project in the city of Greenwood is being done concurrently with the project north of town that ends at the State Trunk Highway 29 intersection. The in-town project runs from the north end of the Rock Creek Bridge to Hunt Street (0.879 miles). The out-of-town project runs from Hunt Street to the State Trunk Highway 29 East intersection (11.62 miles). The total project length is 12.5 miles.

“The current schedule has everything being completed on Sept. 10, but this is all weather dependent,” Zach Rickman, project engineer with MSAProfessional Associates, wrote in an email. “It’s worth noting that the City of Greenwood portion will be completed by Aug. 29.”

He said the town will be opened up in time for Greenwood End of Summer Fest, which this year is Sept. 12 and 13.
