Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $8.6 million contract to improve State Highway 13, between State Highway 98 in the village of Spencer and County Highway N in the city of Colby, Marathon County. Work began this past week.

Michels Road and Stone is the prime contractor for the project. Work includes completing concrete joint repairs and replacements, replacing the asphalt shoulders, replacing guardrail, inlet and manhole repairs as needed, new pavement markings and replacing curb ramps that are not compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Construction will have a number of stages with different impacts to traffic. Motorists can expect single lane closures, flagging operations and full road closures with posted detour routes during construction. When necessary, posted detour routes will utilize highways 97, 153 and 29 at various times during the project. Temporary pedestrian accommodations will be provided during removal and replacement of the existing sidewalk.

At the last village board meeting, village administrator/clerk-treasurer Chris Helgestad said he had been told the plan was to always have at least two lanes of traffic open, except for a 10-day stretch during which trucks will be rerouted to Highway 153.

There is a 110-day work schedule for the project, with an estimated completion date of the start of August. The schedule is dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.
