Marathon Journal 50 years ago... thursday, December 6, 1973 Red Raiders 5-0 atTigers Expense A strong second half for a smooth Marathon Red Raiders team swamped the Stratford Tigers at Stratford. Leading by only one point 31 to 30 at the half, the Raiders outscored Stratford by 22 points in the second half to win.
Fran Seubert and Larry Heindl led the Raiders with 29 and 28 points, the latter getting ten straight points in the 12-point third quarter. Dick Chrouser led Stratford with 17. No other Raiders scored in double figures. Young and K. Leick had 13 and 10 for Stratford.
Stratford Journal 25 years ago... wednesday, December 9, 1998 Santa visits Stratford Winners of the eighth annual Christmas in the Park baking contest, sponsored by the Stratford Area Chamber of Comerce, were as folows: adult candy – Linda Rock; adult cookie – Janet Lieders and Betty Southworth; kids candy – Joel Berens, Jenny Berens and Kaci Wussow; kids cookie – John Knoll, Jenny Schreiner and Sabrina Schaefer; breads – Joel Berens; gingerbread house – Jay Wussow, Cheryl Kuyoth and Pat Thompson; appearance and creativity – Erica Lieders. The winners received awards crafted by Stratford 4-H.
Record Review 50 years ago... thursday, December 6, 1973 Lighting bids for ball park okayed Advertising for bids for the installation of overhead lighting at the Edgar ball park was approved by members of the Village Board at its regular meeting. The board also authorized the expenditure of $2,000 for a survey for water and sewer installation on approximately 130 acres of land located northwest of the village. Trustee Don Johnson reported that after further investigation it was learned that a scrambling decoder couldn’t be installed on the present police car radio equipment. The decoder is transistorized, the squad unit is a tube-type radio.
25 years ago... wednesday, December 2, 1998 Punt, Pass & Kick Megan Ellenbecker, Athens, participated at the state level of the Punt, Pass and Kick competition held at Lambeau Field, Green Bay. Megan placed third in the girls 10-11 year old age group. Athens updates celebration The Athens Community School Connection unveiled a Santa’s Workshop in its own “village” where young people purchased low-priced gifts for classmates or siblings. Entertainment was live, a skit and other presentations were put on by Athens High School students. Not dropping tradition altogether, Santa Claus made his annual arrival and dispensed bags of candy to local youngsters. As always, Athens merchants chipped in to buy the goodies.
Chili supper donation - 1998
The Athens National Catholic Society of Foresters recently held a chili supper with proceeds going toward the Athens Circle of Joy. The donation totaled $440 and pictured are Agnes Gianoli, left, Judith Morse, chairperson of the Circle of Joy, and Merceda Lenhard, right.
