Hornet boys crush Gilman on the road

The Colby boys basketball squad got their second conference win of the season last Friday, going on the road to defeat Gilman. The Hornets dominated their Cloverbelt-East foes, taking a 76-28 victory to go 2-0 in the conference.

Fourteen players scored for the Hornets, a testament to how deep Colby was able to go into their bench in a game that was not close from the beginning. No player ended the game in double digit scoring for the visitors, largely due to the fact that their starters did not see much playing time outside of the first half.

The Hornets quickly established themselves, scoring 12 before Gilman finally got themselves on the board. As they have displayed in their earlier contests, Colby has a number of different weapons to turn to and they made the most of that strength against the Pirates. Another 16-0 run gave them a 39-7 lead going into the final six minutes of the half, getting contributions from all of their starters on the offensive end. With their lead already extended past 30 points, the Hornets started to turn to their bench, mixing them in with the regular starters as the half pushed towards its conclusion. A 10-0 run over the last three minutes gave the Hornets 52 points as the period came to a close, the most they have scored in a half this season.

A 52-11 opening period allowed Colby to turn the ball over to their backups shortly after play resumed, giving many of their bench players some valuable varsity experience. While the game was closer in the second period than the first, the Hornets still outscored Gilman 2417 over the course of the half, leading to the eventual 76-28 win.

Tucker Meyer and Tevin Rue led Colby’s scorers with nine points each, both going 4-8 from the field. Caden Healy also went 4-8 shooting, contributing eight points and bringing down a team-high eight rebounds. Mateo Lopez, Kaden Wiese, Joe Streveler and Adrian Lopez all had seven points. Mateo Lopez led the team with three steals and Adrian Lopez hit on all three of his shot attempts. Streveler led the team with five assists.

Also scoring for the Hornets were Eli Schmitt, who had five points, Braxton Smith and Oscar Zamora, who both had four, Nathaniel Robida contributed three, and Jaxon Polivka, Miguel Morillon and Braxton Meyer had two each.

The Hornets will head to Spencer for their next contest, taking on the Rockets this coming Thursday. After winning their first game of the season, Spencer has gone on a three-game losing streak, falling in their last game against Loyal by a score of 67-60. Colby beat Loyal earlier in the season, defeating them at home by a score of 67-44. The game is set to start at 7:15 p.m.
