Marawood tourney is this week

Stratford’s varsity wrestling team took third place and Marathon finished in fifth place out of 16 teams competing in Saturday’s Wausau East Lumberjack Invite.

Winneconne won the wrestling invite championship and Crandon finished as runners-up. Auburndale, which competes against Stratford and Marathon in the Marawood Conference, placed sixth at Wausau East.

Marathon freshman wrestler Blake Underwood won a 5-2 decision against sophomore Derek Godard of Auburndale in the 106-pound championship match. Underwood remains undefeated with a 32-0 match record this season. Stratford sophomore Jesse Bauer took third place at 106 pounds and Roman Schmidt of Stratford finished in fifth place.

Red Raiders freshman Cale Quaintance took second place at 113 pounds. Stratford freshman Colin Cournoyer placed fourth and Lucas Forrest of Stratford finished in seventh place. Quaintance has a 26-4 match record this season while Colin Cournoyer is 26-6.

Stratford sophomore Trenton Cournoyer placed second at 120 pounds while Marathon sophomore Levi Krautkramer finished in fourth place. Trenton Cournoyer has a 25-5 match record and Krautkramer is 24-11 this season.

Marathon freshman Tate Sonnentag took fourth place at 126 pounds while Stratford freshman Mathias Kaiser finished in seventh place. Tigers sophomore Cayden Leonhardt placed ninth at 132 pounds.

Red Raiders junior Dylan Dodson placed third at 138 pounds and he now has a 22-6 match record this season. Tigers sophomore Brandon Knetter took sixth place and Red Raiders freshman Korbin Hall finished in 14th place.

Marathon junior Derek Vesely took fourth place at 145 pounds while Stratford senior Sawyer Grabow finished in fifth place. Vesely has a 16-6 match record and Grabow is 18-8 this season. Red Raiders freshman Grant Salber took eighth place.

Stratford senior Ryan Becker placed third at 152 pounds while Marathon junior Jacob Smith finished in fifth place. Becker now has a 25-10 match record and Smith is 18-11 this season. Marathon freshman Jaden Herr took 14th place.

Marathon senior Hector Pintor took third place at 160 pounds and he has a 29-9 match record this season. Stratford sophomore Carter Lueck placed second at 170 pounds and he has a 27-6 match record this season. Marathon sophomore Aidan Lang placed 14th at 170 pounds.

Stratford senior Jackson Ormond pinned sophomore Jayden Delao of La Crosse Logan/Central in four minutes, 48 seconds in the 182-pound championship match. Ormond now has a 30-1 match record this season. Marathon senior Mason Putnam took 12th place.

Tigers sophomore Mason Oertel took sixth place at 195 pounds while Red Raiders sophomore Juan Gomez finished in 10th place. Stratford sophomore Matt Kolb placed 11th at 220 pounds and Marathon junior Christian Pintor finished in 14th place.

Marathon senior Logan Werner placed sixth at 285 pounds while Marathon sophomore Ian Hunter finished in 10th place. Werner now has a 20-11 match record this season.

No Marawood champ yet

The last Marawood Conference meet, which will determine the regular-season conference dual match champion, was rescheduled from last Thursday due to inclement weather to 6 p.m. on Friday, February 3, at Edgar High School. Marathon will attempt to prevent Stratford from winning its 10th consecutive conference dual match championship.

Conference tournament

The Marawood Conference tournament begins at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Jan. 28, at Marathon High School.
