Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on June 12 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Three games of Sheepshead were played. Henry Faber won first place and Tom Ellenbecker came in second in the first game. Norbert Lake won first and Alvira Henrichs came in second in the second game. Pat Frank won first and Rick Schaetzl came in second in the third game.

Low score was Aaron Totzke. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Animal Acrobats

Discover how different animals move, learn to identify tracks, and even meet a few live animals like a snake and bearded dragon. Children and their caregivers are invited to this special Animal Acrobats presentation on Thursday, June 19, at the Athens Community Hall, 221 Caroline St., from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event is free; no registration required. DYI Kaleidoscope

School-aged children are invited to drop in at the Athens Branch Library to build their own kaleidoscope any time during open hours the week of June 23-28. Use simple materials like cardboard tubes, glitter, and beads to create a mesmerizing optical illusion. All supplies will be provided, no registration required. Mathew Redmann, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in game design and development-art from UW-Stout, was named to the spring 2025 dean’s list. The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Sand dollar wall hangings

Adults are invited to the Edgar Branch Library to create a sand dollar wall-hanging on Monday, June 23, from 5-6 p.m. Participants will create a wall-hanging using just a few supplies like driftwood, sand dollars, and twine. Composting class

Adults are invited to learn how to compost during a free class at the Marathon City Branch Library on Monday, June 23, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Janell Wehr, horticulture educator with Extension Marathon County, will present on soil texture, pH levels, the basics of fertilizing, and how to get started with composting. Composting is the process of taking organic materials such as yard clippings, food scraps, etc., and breaking them down into nutrient-rich compost that can be used to improve soil and plant health. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required by visiting the library website or calling 715-261-7230.

Patriotic Art Fair

Alois Dreikosen Unit 469 of the American Legion Auxiliary will present its Patriotic Art Fair premier exhibit in conjunction with the concerts in the park sponsored by the Marathon Heritage Center.

Visit the Marathon City Heritage Center, The Copper Mug and Pizza Market on Tuesday, July 15, and Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 6-8 p.m. The mission of the art fair is to promote patriotism and love of country, and to think about the sacrifices made, what it means to have freedom, to bring people of all ages together, to have fun with red, white and blue, and to show spirit and pride within our community.
