Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on May 1 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. Steve Klockziem won first place and Pat Frank came in second in the first game. Dale Frank won first and Dave Perrodin came in second in the second game.
Low score was Sally Stubbe. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
Book club
The Athens Book Club will meet at the Athens City Branch Library on Tuesday, May 13, at 2 p.m. to discuss “Next Year in Havana” by Chanel Cleeton A freelance writer returns to her grandmother’s homeland to fulfill her last wish to have her ashes scattered in Havana and discovers her family history amidst Cuba’s tropical beauty and dangerous political environment. Athens Auxiliary 8527
The April 22 meeting of the Athens American Legion Auxiliary Unit 8527 was called to order by President Ruth Weiler at 6:30 p.m. at the Athens Fire and Ambulance back room. Ten members and one visitor, district president Jane Bynum, were present.
The opening prayer was read by chaplain Cheryl Engel, and the Salute to the Flag was said by all.
The secretary’s reports was given and approved. General orders were read. The treasurer’s report was given and read. A quarterly audit was done.
A motion was made by Gayle Mauer and seconded by Cheryl Engel to pay Denise Sekorski for the Christmas gift for the Giving Tree. Motion approved.
Cheryl Engel gave the Sunshine Report. Committee reports were given.
The group now has 50 members, four short of 100 percent.
Buddy Poppies will be available for sale on May 15-17.
The Auxiliary will be having its Dinner on the Square on the Friday evenings of June 11 and July 13.
A motion was made by Gayle Mauer and seconded by Marilyn Meyn to buy a raffle ticket from the VFW and American Legion. Motion carried.
A motion was made by Marilyn Meyn and seconded by Gloria Lavicka to give gift cards again to the buglers who play at the cemeteries for veterans, and to the girls who sang at home sporting events. Motion carried.
Nominations were made for upcoming officers. President Ruth Weiler was nominated. Gayle Mauer was nominated for senior vice president by Gloria Lavicka. Gloria Lavicka was nominated for junior vice president by Gayle Mauer. Marilyn Meyn was nominated for secretary by Denise Sekorski. Treasurer Julie Ellenbecker and chaplain Cheryl Engel were nominated for new terms. Karen Weiler was nominated for conductress by Cheryl Engel. Guard Melinda Daniels was nominated for a new term. Nominated for trustees were Becky Knab, Ceil Johnson and Denise Sekorski.
All nominations were accepted. Cheryl Engel read the closing prayer, and the meeting was adjourned.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 27.

Athens History
The Athens Area Historical Society invites the public to join them in viewing a collection of items from Athens days gone on Friday, June 6, by from 5:30-8 p.m., and on Saturday, June 7, from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Athens Fire Department meeting room. This event is free of charge to attend.
EDGAR
Medicare 101
Adults can learn Medicare basics on Wednesday, May 14, from 4-5 p.m. at Edgar Branch Library. This presentation, led by a local life and health insurance agent, will include the difference between Medicare parts, what steps you should take when you turn 65, and time for answering any questions you may have about Medicare. Bake and Book Sale
The Edgar Women’s Club will be holding a Bake and Book Sale May 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Edgar Village Hall. Anyone donating books may bring books to the community room and place them on the east table. Bring your own bag to purchase books on a per-bag basis.
Family Story Time
Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Edgar Branch Library for Family Story Times. During this 30minute program, library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities. The next Family Story Times will be Tuesday, May 20, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

Plant lovers can swap the old for the new during a free plant swap event from May 12-17 at the Marathon City Branch Library. On April 21, the Marshfield Area Retired Educators held their regular meeting. President Sally Lucas introduced visiting WREA Region 3 co-director, Margaret Green.
Ruby P. announced the winners of the MAREA scholarships, which will be awarded at their high school awards ceremonies held in May. She also circulated the June 12 brat fry sign-up list, with all monies going to the scholarship fund.
