Open house

The public is welcome to attend an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony at noon this Saturday, Dec. 9, to celebrate the opening of the new Village of Athens Municipal Building.

This new location will house the village clerk’s office, Athens Police Department and the Marathon County Public Library-Athens Branch. There is also space available in the basement for future opportunities.

The ribbon cutting ceremony is at noon with with light refreshments to follow. The open house is from noon until 2 p.m.

Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on November 30 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Two games of Sheepshead were played. Andy Hoef won the first game and Tom Ellenbecker took second place. Rick Schaetzl won the second game and Dave Perrodin took second. Norb Belter received low score.

Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

MCPL Story Time

Bring your entire family to sto-ry time at the new Alfred Street location. Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to join library staff in Athens for this 30-minute program. There will be stories, songs and other literature-based activities during the 30-minute program on Monday, Dec. 11, from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Epiphany Celebration

Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens invites the public to attend an Epiphany Celebration, beginning at 1 p.m. with snacks and refreshments, on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.

People will be enlightened with the music and ministry of Terry Howard. This event is open to anyone and all ages of people in the community. Trinity Lutheran Church encourages people to bring their family and friends.

E dgar Wien Wildcats meet

The Wien Wildcats met on November 19 with 31 members present. The club voted on going to Perkinstown for its winter activity, with more details to follow.

New officers were sworn into office. Club members participated in the following activities this month: pin the bear on the turkey, decorating cupcakes like a turkey, Christmas cards for the veterans and marshmallow toothpick towers.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17. New members are welcome to join us at the Edgar Steam Show youth building.

Christmas program

St. John ELCA of Edgar is presenting its Sunday School Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 17, during the 9 a.m. service. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Following the service, the church women will hold their annual “Cookies for a Cause” cookie walk. All proceeds will go to the Women’s Community in Wausau.

Medicaid 101

Adults curious about Medicaid are invited to the Marathon County Library’s Edgar Branch, located at 224 S. Third Ave., to learn the basics. The program will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 13, from 4-5 p.m.

Attendees will learn more about Medicaid, the federal health coverage for low-income individuals and families. Donna Heil, a local licensed health and life insurance agent, will cover several topics including benefits, qualifications and how to sign up while also answering questions. She will also present a program on long-term care on Jan. 10, 2024.

The event is free and open to all ages and no registration is required. People wanting more information can call the Edgar Branch library at 715-352-3155.

Community events

The following Edgar community events will be held in December in the St. Stephen Lutheran Church basement: Edgdar High School students will sing Christmas songs from 1-3 p.m. and there will be snacks and refreshments; bingo with prizes, refreshments and snacks from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27.

St. Stephen Lutheran Church is located at 424 N. 3rd Avenue in Edgar. People needing a ride to the events or who have questions about the events should call either Mark at 715-348-5802 or Colleen at 715-571-8277.

Birth announcement

A son, Birch Dawson Lemmer, was born to Dawson and Olivia Lemmer, Honolulu, Hawaii, on November 12, 2023 at Citizens Medical Center in Colby, Kansas.

He weighed seven pounds, 11 ounces and was 20 inches long.

Grandparents are Tim and Sara Lemmer, Edgar; and Mike and Annette Wetter, Colby, Kan.

Great-grandparents are Tony and Lou Anne Lemmer, Edgar; Gerald and Cynthia Hall, Marathon; Eugene and Margaret Wetter, Norton, Kan.; and Bobbie Holsman, Bogue, Kan.

Circle of Joy Giving Tree

The Circle of Joy is sponsoring a “Giving Tree” for the Edgar area at Nicolet National Bank in Edgar. Decorations on the tree have a child’s age, clothing size and gift suggestions. Gifts should be wrapped and returned to the bank by Thursday, Dec. 15.

MCPL Story Time

Children of all ages and their parents and caregivers are invited to join library staff on the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Edgar Branch for family story time. Enjoy learning with your children through stories, songs and other literature-based activities in this 30-minute program, on Tuesday, Dec. 19, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

Pokemon Club

The Fenwood Lions Club will be sponsoring a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus in Fenwood on Dec. 9, from 1:30-3 p.m. They will be at Illusions Bar with a bag of goodies for children. Bring your lists to share with Santa.

M arathon Yard decorating contest

The Knights of Columbus are again having their “Keep Christ in Christmas” themed yard decorating contest this year. Judging for the contest will be held on Friday, Dec. 15. A prize will be awarded to the contest winner. To register for the contest, email your name and address to krautaa@gmail.com.

Circle of Joy Giving Tree

A Circle of Joy Christmas “Giving Tree” will be located at People’s State Bank, Marathon. Ornaments with children’s ages and wish lists have been placed on the tree or are available from tellers. All gifts are to be wrapped and returned to the tree no later than Friday, December 8. If you are interested in participating, pick up a name at People’s State Bank or the village office.

ounty Holidays at the Houses

The Marathon County Historical Society will present its annual Holidays at the Houses on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Woodson History Center and Yawkey House Museum will be decorated for the holidays, and visitors will experience the season with live entertainment, children’s activities, and the always popular Friends of Wausau Historic Landmarks’ Sweet Landmarks Gingerbread Contest.

This year’s theme will be “Making Christmas Memories.” What are the things you look forward to doing every year during the holiday season? What reminds you of home? Decorating cookies, caroling, holiday storytime, vintage toy and Barbie displays, decorating a tree, photo fun, coloring contest and, of course, Santa will keep everyone having a festive time while making new memories.

Deer dumpster

The Central Wisconsin Conservation Club Inc, in conjunction with Marathon County Waste Management, is sponsoring a dumpster for the disposal of deer carcass waste (rib cages, heads, legs and fat scrap) during the deer firearms season. The dumpster will be placed in the Edgar Waste Disposal site, located off of East Limits Road. There will also be a separate container placed there for unwanted deer hides, which will be donated to the Lions Camp for the Blind. The dumpster will be there through Dec. 10.

This program is being done as a service to the surrounding communities to help keep the environment cleaner from improperly disposed of in rural ditches. People are asked to only use the dumpster for the waste it is intended for so that the project can continue to grow in the future.
