Athens OKs stormwater plan

The Athens Village Board on Monday voted to approve a stormwater plan for SC Swiderski’s 64-unit apartment complex.

Village board members voted at the August meeting to rezone almost seven acres of land across from Athenian Living on Caroline Street to allow SC Swiderski to build the apartment complex. The village board also voted in August to approve the sanitary sewer for SC Swiderski’s proposed apartment complex. The company will start construction of the apartment building in spring 2023.

In other village board business:

n The village will make a second payment to Viking Industrial Painting, headquartered in Omaha, Neb., for $22,895 for painting the Athens water tower this past summer. The village already made a payment of $122,265 to Viking Industrial. It now only owes a remaining balance of $7,640 for the total $152,800 water tower painting project.

n The village of Athens will register for Per- and plyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) Cost Recovery Litigation with the Wisconsin Rural Water Association (WRWA) and the National Rural Water Association (NRWA) at no cost to the village.

The WRWA and NRWA hired the Napoli Shkolnik law firm to file a cost recovery action to provide water and wastewater systems the opportunity to recover any current or future expenses for testing, treatment and remediation of PFAS contamination.

PFAS are human-made chemicals used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products like stain and water resistant fabrics, cleaning products, paints and firefighting foams. PFAS do not easily breakdown and some types have been shown to accumulate in the environment and in human bodies.

n The village of Athens will have MSA Professional Services in Marshfield draft and send a letter to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) stating the village is committed to removing the soil on top of its water reservoir, but not until next spring. DNR officials want the village to remove soil on top of the water reservoir now so the village can repair cracks in the reservoir. The village is concerned about removing the soil before winter because it would result in a freeze thaw on top of the reservoir which would create more damage to it.

n Athens will hire a contractor for $3,000 to haul and load reclaimed black- top to Oak Street. The village hired Peterson & Sons of Medford this past summer to screen a blacktop pile for the village to use on future street projects. The amount of screened blacktop that will be hauled to Oak Street will be graded to create a better base on the gravel road.

n Athens will hold trick-or-treating from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30.

n The Athens Village Board will hold its December regular board meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 19.
