Whether the Cobban Bridge is a 108-year-old historical landmark or simply the easiest route for transportation across the Chippewa River, residents agree the structure, located on State Hwy. 178, between Jim Falls and Cornell, is worth saving. The county is considering removing the bridge – putting it into retirement, so to speak, which would not only mean losing a significant piece of history, but also remove a much-needed river crossing.

30 Years Ago – 1995 Joel Hedrington hopes to have some of his old customers from SFR, stop in at his new restaurant, J-Bers Pizza, in downtown Cadott, in what was the old Wenzel’s Bar. Hedrington ran his pizza business on the West Hill, where SFR is located, and received many of the employees from that business.
40 Years Ago – 1985 It’s not news that the local economy is dependent on the wood industry, but what is news, is that someone is starting to pay attention to educating young people about the future of the wood industry in the area. That someone is Ben Hetchler, with the West Central Wisconsin Private Industry Council and Lake Holcombe Industries business owner.
50 Years Ago – 1975 Cadott’s Bohemian Lodge is selected as the host of the Wisconsin and Upper Michigan State Convention of Bohemian Lodges. About 35 lodges, from throughout the state, will be in attendance.

100 Years Ago – 1925 The A. J. Edminister Company sells the mercantile business in Cornell, to C. W. Thompson, of Twin Valley, Minn. Thompson has already been to the city and takes possession of the property, while C. M. Runkel, who has conducted the business for the company ever since the store was started, will continue to make his home in Cornell, until he relocates.
