10 Years Ago – 2010

The Free Beer Quartet, consisting of Holcombe natives Mike Bonn and Pat Lynch, Scot Grunseth, Glen Flora, and Brad Martin, Florida, sing the National Anthem at a Brewers game. The group was formed 26 years ago, when the four attended Mount Senario College in Ladysmith.

20 Years Ago – 2000

Martha Bubeck Schmidt, 1930 Cadott High School graduate, is named in the Who’s Who in America Millennium Edition, for her work with home economics in the classroom. Schmidt credits her success in life to her education at Cadott.

30 Years Ago – 1990

The Cornell Landfill closes its gates for good, to comply with DNR regulations. Garbage can still be taken to a dumpster until the end of the year, after which, it’s unknown what Cornell will do to dispose of refuse.

40 Years Ago – 1980

Robert Gilles places high among hundreds of entries, at the American Cured Meat Championship in Texas. As part of Chuck Wagon Processing, Gilles entered his summer sausage.

50 Years Ago – 1970

Michael Kascinski, Beloit, cheats death when traveling through Cornell, after his jeep swerved to miss an injured deer on the roadway. The vehicle rolled several times, but Kascinski walked away from the accident unharmed.

60 Years Ago – 1960

Cadott people are stumped as to whether a flying saucer, prehistoric swamp monster or plain old pranks have taken place at the Lutheran church parsonage lawn. A perfect circle of an unknown brown substance was left at the site and a sample was sent to a university for testing.

100 Years Ago – 1920

A poultry car stops in Cornell, as two tons of chickens, ducks and geese are taken from the L. L. Williamson Meat Market. It’s believed to be the first car load gathered in this country and farmers should be encouraged by such a profitable selling market.
