David “Dave” L. Backhaus, 76, Cadott, passed away peacefully, Monday, July 6, 2026, at Marshfield Medical Center in Eau Claire.

Dave was born April 24, 1950, to George and Carry (Gilles) Backhaus, in Milwaukee.

He grew up in Menomonee Falls, and in the mid-1970s, he moved with his family, to Cadott, when Dave purchased Cameric’s Tavern and renamed the bar Dave’s Place (now known as J & J’s Bar).

He later worked various jobs in Eau Claire, until he knew it was time to start a printing business – Craftline Printing – and continued printing, for 46 years, until health issues caused Dave to retire.

Dave served in the U.S. Navy, from 1971-73, at Subic Bay, in the Philippines.

He married Cindy Colburn, July 11, 2000. Dave enjoyed playing billiards, watching sports, listening to all types of music and traveling to Ashland, for his anniversary.

He is survived by his wife – Cindy A. Backhaus; sisters – Lynn Schneider and Brenda (Jim) Nennig; stepdaughters – Ann Lato, Hope (Luke) Elmhorst, Tiffany Hakes (Joe) and Jennifer Hakes (Chris); 13 stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandson; six nieces and nephews; and aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his parents – George and Carry Backhaus.

A celebration of life is Thursday, July 16, from 4:30-6 p.m., followed by a concluding prayer, at 6 p.m., at Leiser Funeral Home in Cadott.

In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the family or, a second option would be donations/checks written out to: Service Projects International or a charity of your choice.

Leiser Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Cadott, is assisting the family.
