Donald “Don” Wayne Gudmanson entered into his Heavenly home, with his family by his side, Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2025, at the age of 91.

Don was born at home, July 14, 1934, in Cadott, to Victor and Betsy (Arneson) Gudmanson. He always felt blessed by his humble roots, which instilled in him countless lessons that he shared with everyone he met.

During Don’s youth, particularly through interactions with his high school English teacher, Mrs. Anderson, he was inspired to become a teacher. His pursuit of higher education and football career, at UW-Eau Claire, were interrupted by active duty with the United States Navy, during the Korean Conflict.

He served honorably, and returned home to complete his studies and rejoin the Bluegold football team. Don was inducted into the Bluegold Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1986. He furthered his education, by completing a master’s degree in vocational education-guidance.

Although he began his career as a high school teacher and football/baseball coach, his call shifted toward a distinguished career with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. Starting at Fox Lake Correctional Institution, he then served at Kettle Moraine Boys School and Correctional Institution, finishing his career as the warden of both Oshkosh and Jackson correctional institutions, retiring in 1999.

Don recognized the opportunity his position afforded him, laying the foundation for innovative educational and rehabilitation programs, that became national and international models, earning him speaking invitations worldwide. He received the Sanger B. Powers Award, in 1999, for excellence in criminal justice.

He remained committed to his belief, that every person deserved to be treated with dignity and given the opportunity for a second chance.

Though his educational, athletic and vocational pursuits are noteworthy, the accomplishment of which Don was proudest, was his family. He was married to Marlis (Keiner) Gudmanson and they had four beautiful children together.

He found true love again with Betty Jane (Kind) Killick; he adored his wife of 45 years, raising their family and building a life together. Don was happiest when everyone was gathered at home for holidays or making memories together, up at the cottage.

He was never too busy to lend a listening ear, tell a good joke or give some words of wisdom, especially if he could do it while drinking a cold Leinie’s. A phone call with him included a report on his gardens, as well as commentary on his beloved Wisconsin sports teams.

Don was a proud member of the American Legion, where he served in leadership positions, including the Last Man’s Club.

While we will deeply miss him, we will always carry him and all that he taught us, in our hearts.

Those left to cherish his memory include children – Kayla Ericksen, Mary Beth Resimius (Randy), Donald L. Gudmanson (Lynn), Susan Gudmanson, Steven Killick (Charisma), Stacy Malison and Gayanne Stanley; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces; nephews; and extended family and friends.

A celebration of Don’s life is Friday, Oct. 24, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Oshkosh. Visitation is from 9-11:30 a.m., with the service at 11:45 a.m.

Full military honors are at the church. Interment is at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Plymouth.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family would welcome donations toward a memorial that is being established to honor Don’s legacy.
