Joel Paul Cottreau
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joel Paul Cottreau, who passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the age of 72 in Rockford, Ill. Joe suffered a tragic accident on Jan. 16, 2026, which left him unable to return to his home and requiring long-term care for the remainder of his life. Joe was born on Sept. 11, 1953, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee, to Joseph Leopold and Jean Agnes (Musha) Cottreau. He grew up in Milwaukee and attended Burdick School and Bayview High School before pursuing a lifelong career as a welder. During the last several years of his career, he worked as a boilermaker. he built through his skill and dedication.
Joe married Annette Kriplean in West Allis in 1975. They later divorced. He later married Faye Cottreau, and they also later divorced.
Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time in the woods. He was a talented woodworker who built many beautiful pieces of furniture for his home. He loved his dogs and found great joy in spending time with family, gardening, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.
Joe is survived by his two daughters, Jo Anne Peterson, of Rib Lake, and Julia (Eric) Braaten, of Rib Lake; his grandchildren, Kya Braaten, Wyatt and Rylee Peterson; his brothers, Michael Cottreau and Tom Cottreau; and his sister, Denise (Michael) Welliver.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Jean Cottreau; and his grandson, Gavin Braaten.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends.
