Joe was born to Joseph and Anastasia (Knoll) Schwabe on August 19, 1936, in Stratford. He was a graduate of Stratford High School. On September 8, 1962, he was united in marriage to the former Mary Burish at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edgar. Sadly, Mary passed away on December 20, 2023. Joe took over the family farm after graduating high school. Throughout the years, he worked other jobs in addition to farming, including working for the railroad, driving gravel truck, dehorning cattle, and at Boson Construction from 1973-1976 when he took a break from farming. He later owned and operated his own construction company. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Stratford.

Hobbies that Joe enjoyed included bowling and throwing horseshoes, getting his family together to celebrate just about anything or maybe firing up the grill. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening in his later years, after selling the farm, and took home numerous ribbons for the gladiolas he entered in the Central Wisconsin State Fair. He and Mary spent a lot of time fishing wherever they could wet a line. They traveled to Florida, Texas, and other locations, and for many years, Grenada, Miss. His greatest joys were the times spent with Mary and with his family. Those who will cherish his memory include his children: Susan (Mike) Fellows of Park Falls, Mike (Theresa) Schwabe of Stratford, Lori (Jeff) Dums of Medford, John (Judy) Schwabe of Stratford, Joe Schwabe Jr. of Stratford and Sandra (Gary) Dennee of Rozellville; his grandchildren: Caitlin, Bailey, Jonathon (Amanda), Joshua (Alicia), Jeffrey, Jenna (Mitch), Jessica (Zach), Mikayla (Mitch), Makenzie (Nehemiah), Max, Maggie, Abbigail and Ella and his great-grandchildren: Obsidian, Finley, Armand, Charlie, Eddie, Lawrence and Emma, along with many other relatives and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anastasia Schwabe; his wife, Mary Schwabe; five brothers: Frank, Harry, Walter, George and Lawrence and four sisters: Rose, Veronica, Alvina and Theresa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are being accepted by Joe’s family for a charity to be determined.
