Roman J. Schreiber, age 100, of Abbotsford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, at The Waterford at Colby, under the tender care of Moments Hospice.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, 2026, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Milan. Father George Graham will preside. Interment to follow at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome from 3 until 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford and from noon until time of service Monday at the church.
Roman was born on October 19, 1925, the son of Bernard and Hattie (Soucek) Schreiber in the Town of Johnson. He was born and raised in the Milan area and graduated from Abbotsford High School in 1943. On November 17,1948, Roman was united in marriage to Marcella Carter at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Milan. For more than 69 years, his greatest love and devotion was to his wife. Through all of life’s joys and challenges, he was by her side; her partner, her protector and her rock. In the later years of her life when she needed him most, he never wavered and he stood beside her with unwavering love, patience and strength, caring for her and making sure she never had to face those difficult days alone. Together they were a beautiful testament to what true love means; commitment, devotion and being there for one another through every season of life. His love for her was constant until the very end and he will always be remembered for the extraordinary way he loved and cared for his wife. She preceded him in death on June 10, 2018.
Prior to his marriage, Roman worked at the Milan grocery store, a paint store and the Milan Feed Store. After his marriage, Roman and Marcella farmed for 10 years north of Jerkwater. In 1958, they purchased their dairy farm in Milan and he farmed until he turned 75 years old.
Roman was an active member of St. Thomas parish and his faith was an important part of his life. He served as an officer for Catholic Family, on the church council at St. Thomas, a board member of the Dixon School, Milan community club and was a man of many traits. Roman enjoyed bowling on many leagues until he was age 96. He was on a church and bar dartball league for many years. Roman also enjoyed watching the Packers and Brewers, playing Sheephead, watching ball games in Milan and making the famous hamburgers for the Milan tournaments for many years. He also enjoyed dancing to polkas and waltzes. His favorite pastime in later years was enjoying his children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. As a family, we were blessed to have our dad in our lives healthy for almost 101 years. Roman is survived by his 11 children: Mary (Arnie) Krautkramer of Marathon, a son-in-law, Bob Knecht of Spencer, Gerard (Gale) Schreiber of Athens, Clyde (Irene) Schreiber of Marshfield, Bonnie Lake of Abbotsford, Rebecca (Jeff) Schaefer of Abbotsford, Cinthia (Mike) Beran of Athens, Alice Langjahr of Colby, Lucy (Doug) Schmidt of Athens, Kathy (Rick) Ewert of Falcon, Mo., Lee (Madeline) Schreiber of Chippewa Falls and Tracy Schreiber of Medford; 36 grandchildren: Renee (Mark) Huebsch, Philip (Brittany) Krautkramer, Steven Krautkramer (Heidi), Joshua (Cathy) Knecht, Justin (Bobbie Jo) Knecht, David (Amanda) Knecht, Bradley (Natasha) Knecht, Andy (Jennifer) Knecht, Jeremy (Kristi) Schreiber, Russell (Lisa) Schreiber, Gabriel (Molly) Schreiber, Natalie (Alex) Guerrero, Shaun Lake, Brandon Lake, Gina (Erik) Brown, Ben Schaefer, Luke Schaefer, Ayla Schaefer (Jayson), Eric (Jennifer) Beran, April (Steve) Wirtala, Jason Beran (Stephanie), Steven (Samantha) Langjahr, Beth Behrens (Brett), Kelly (Wesley) Catron, Timothy (Grace) Schmidt, Cody (Jackie) Schmidt, Ryan (Sydney) Ewert, Ross (Alexandra) Ewert, Joshua (Morgan) Clark, Becca Schreiber, Grant Schreiber, Reiley Schreiber and their mother, Jackie Schreiber, Rachael Schreiber, Aedan Schreiber, Leo Christianson and Charlotte Schreiber; 64 greatgrandchildren and one on the way and one great-great-grandson. He is further survived by two sisters-in-law: Marcella Schreiber and Shirley Zettler; a brother-in-law, Melvin Carter and many other beloved family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marcella; a daughter, Joan Knecht, and a son, Martin Schreiber; a grandson, Chip Schaefer; a great-grandson, Zayne Brown; his brothers: Father Bernard Jr., Clarence, George (Carol) and August, his sister, Sister Irene “Loretta” Schreiber, including all sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
