Richard “Dick” Edward Hunsader, age 89, a long-time resident of Dorchester, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024. Born on December 26, 1934, Richard graduated from Algoma High School in 1952. He ran the Rankin Cheese Factory and served in the U.S. Army Reserve before marrying Joan Blahnik on May 12, 1959. They ran the Cloverdale Cheese Factory from 1960 through 1972 before moving to Dorchester. Dick worked for the U.S. Postal Service and served as the postmaster in Stetsonville from 1986 to 2000. Dick believed in community service and was active in the Lions Club for many years, where he was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow. He also served as president for the village of Dorchester and enjoyed working in many roles and projects for Dorchester Days and the Dorchester Park. Dick is survived by children: Steven (Julie) Hunsader and Mark (Meg) Hunsader; four grandchildren: Caskey, Erin (Ross) Witucki, Jude and Evan; two greatgrandchildren: Lily and Joe, and his brother David. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; parents, Edward and Ruth (Cepek); his brother, Ken and sister, Diane. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford. Lynn D. Schreiber, age 68, of Milan, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Marshfield Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer. Lynn’s faith was important to her and she became a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church on March 8, 2024. Lynn loved and cherished her family and loved spending time with them. She would never miss her grandchildren’s activities. Lynn would decorate cakes for any special occasion. She also adored her dog, Chance. Lynn is survived by her husband, Frank, of 50 years; two sons: John (April) of Milan and Nathan (Mandi) of Abbotsford; four grandchildren: Payton, Parker, Ella and Maiya. Luella J. Walters, 87, of Abbotsford, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024, at the Abbotsford Healthcare Center, under the care of Hope Hospice. They also ran the Walters Adult Care Home in Curtiss for many years, taking care of the elderly. Luella was a gifted musician. She played the piano, guitar and violin. She also sang and wrote music. She enjoyed hand quilting, crocheting and was very active on the computer. Luella had a strong Christian faith. She taught Sunday school for a short period and was also youth group leader and piano player at Curtiss Alliance Church. Margaret “Mugs” E. Schmidt (nee Baker) passed away at Aspirus Regency Assisted Living Facility, Phillips. Margaret was born on August 27, 1925, in Stanley, to parents Warren and Euphemia Baker. She grew up in Stanley, attended St. Mary’s Catholic School, and graduated from Stanley High School in 1942. She worked that summer at the Baraboo Defense Plant with her sister, Rita, and her best friend, Betty Seidl. She then attended Taylor County Normal Teachers College in Medford. She completed the course in a year and a half due to WWII and the shortage of teachers. She married Reubin A. Schmidt on June 3, 1947, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Stanley. They lived on a farm outside of Dorchester for several years, then moved to Abbotsford. Upon Reubin’s retirement, they moved up to their lake home in Phillips. For several winters they became snowbirds, spending time in Davenport, Fla. Margaret taught for 33 years; her first teaching position was for two years at Gilman Elementary School. She then taught at Pioneer Country School, Thorp for two years, Liberty County School, Stetsonville for three years. She taught for the Dorchester School District for one year. Margaret taught at Pleasant Hill Country Grade School for three years. She taught at the Abbotsford School District for 22 years, retiring in 1980. Her daughters surprised her by putting a plaque with her name on the “Tiles of Honor” Wall at the Abbotsford School in December of 1999. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her four grandchildren, she also painted and did ceramics. Margaret also enjoyed walking every day, which she continued to do after moving up to the lake. Mugs and Angie Knapp would sometimes walk multiple times a day when Angie was at her cottage. Reubin and Mugs also enjoyed traveling with family and friends, who lovingly knew her as “Amaretto Annie.” They traveled to the east and west coasts. Mugs is survived by her three daughters: Mavis (Ernest “Jr”) Dyson of Wauwatosa, Arlyne (Tom) Frane of Phillips and Bobbi (Rocky) Schmidt of Phillips; four grandchildren: Kevin (Kris) Frane of Somerset, Kelly (Joe) Gribowski of Eau Claire, Andy (Mandi) Schmidt of Phillips and Erin (Jamie) Hinker of Colby. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Kandra (Craig) McKenzie, Daejo Laurin, Madison Gribowski, Edynn, Archer, Cash and Lariah Hinker, and Brynlee Schmidt; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Reubin; parents, brothers: Paul, Edward (Pat) and Richard (Ole), and sisters: Agnes, Genevieve, Imogene and Rita. Marvin “Marv” L. Broeske, age 85, of Abbotsford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, at Mayo Health Clinic Systems in Eau Claire. Marvin was born on June 24, 1938, the son of Elroy and Emma (Behring) Broeske in Dorchester. He graduated from Abbotsford High School in 1956 and attended UW Eau Claire where he played basketball for the Blugolds. Marvin was a member of the Army National Guard for 11 years and was called to service during the Berlin Crisis. On January 26, 1961, Marv was united in marriage to Kay Bobbe in Medford. They raised their family in Abbotsford. Marv worked at gas stations in Colby before working 25 years as office manager at Kraft Foods in Milan. He then managed the Cenex Convenience Store in Dorchester for many years. Marv was a huge sports fan and officiated basketball and volleyball at all levels for over 60 years. He truly cherished all his officiating partners but had special memories officiating with Kenny Christensen, Chad Austin and Al Braun. Marv was also highly active playing and organizing adult basketball teams and leagues in and around Abbotsford for many years. He also played on several adult softball teams that played in leagues throughout the area. Marv traveled to tournaments across the state playing in tournaments well into his 50s. He told wonderful stories of all the special plays and games from all the sports he enjoyed playing. He loved the life-long friendships that he made during all those years of playing sports. He was always in the mood for stopping somewhere on his way home from playing or officiating for a cold one or two and was even known to have won quite a few beer drinking trophies with all his softball buddies! He also liked to keep everything in his life highly organized and tidy, from his lawn to his dining room hutch, to his car, and even his garage was neat and tidy. He was a meticulous bookkeeper and took immense pride in doing things right the first time. Marv enjoyed going up to the cottage on Sacketts Lake to relax with his family. Marv was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Colby and is a past member of the Abbotsford Jaycees. Marv is survived by his wife, Kay, of 62 years; four children: Jill (Steve) Weiler of Marshfield, Patrick (Nellie) Broeske of Brownsville, Robyn (Paul) Schueller of StratfordandAllysonBroeskeofAbbotsford; nine grandchildren: Jena (Ryan) Moertel, Hailey Weiler (fiancé Nick Bolen), Trent Weiler, Bennett Broeske, Alivia Broeske, Jacob Broeske, Kamryn Schueller, Braeden Schueller and Kalyn Schueller, and one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Moertel. He is further survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-inlaw: Lester (Marlene) Bobbe, Linda Boxrucker and Larry Bobbe; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Adell M. Stelzel, age 86, of Colby, passed away on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, at Marshfield Medical Center. Adell was born on October 14, 1937, the daughter of Elroy and Helen (Thieme) Brehm in Colby. She graduated from Colby High School and earned her teaching degree from UW-Eau Claire. Adell taught special education at Owen-Withee, Abbotsford and Unity and elementary school in Unity and Colby. On August 3, 1985, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Stelzel at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby. He preceded her in death in March of 2002. Adell was active in her churches: Zion Lutheran in Colby where she was the organist and Trinity Lutheran in Rib Falls, including serving as organist, choir director and involved with the woman’s’ groups. Adell was active in the Lions Club in Rib Falls and founding member for the Unity Lions Club. She received the Melvin Jones award, which is the highest honor bestowed on a Lion for all her involvement. Adell was a member of the Red Hats and volunteered with the Steam Engine Show in Edgar. She loved watching and feeding the birds, gardening and enjoyed traveling. Adell will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew and cherished her. Adell is survived by her two sons: Kent (Kim) Frome and Kurt (Lori) Frome; a step-son, Tim (Wendy) Stelzel; five grandchildren: Michael (India) Frome, Kyle (Laura) Frome, Angela (Kevin) Esselman, Evan (Montana) Frome and Olivia Frome (Ian Waller); three step-grandchildren: Shawn, Natasha and Ashley; eight great-grandchildren: Mason, Parker, Jase, Jordin, Kember, Ava, Jade and Larken. Richard “Dick” C. Gabriel of Cedarburg passed away peacefully on February 1, 2024, at the age of 90. He was born 1/1/1934 in Milwaukee to Anton J. and Esther G. (Wegner) Gabriel. Dick was the first baby born in the nation in 1934. As a child, Dick made many memories spending summers in Dorchester and returning for family reunions. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Dick worked in many fields and most notably owned Gabriel’s New London Floral with his wife Mary. He was a member of the New London Rotary Club, the New London School Board and St. Francis Borgia Catholic Parish in Cedarburg. Dick enjoyed his grandchildren, choral singing, hunting, cycling and doing handyman projects. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Esther, brother Jim and sister Ginny (Mayer). Sister Loretta Schreiber, a Sister of Mercy of the Holy Cross, age 95, died February 13, 2024, at Bell Tower Residence Assisted Living in Merrill. Irene Schreiber was born May 2, 1928, in Athens, to Bernard and Hattie (Soucek) Schreiber. She entered Holy Cross Convent in Merrill on August 12, 1947, and professed her vows on July 2, 1949. Sister Loretta was in her 74th year of ministry at the time of her death. She attended Our Lady of the Holy Cross High School, Merrill, graduating in 1947. She received her practical nursing certificate from St. Joseph’s School of Practical Nursing in Dickinson, N.D., on September 29, 1953. Sister Loretta was a staff nurse (8 years) at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dickinson, N.D., Holy Cross Hospital (2 years) Merrill, and St. Joseph’s Hospital (27 years) Breese, Ill. When she retired from nursing, she continued her service to patients and employees in the Heath Information Services (17 years) at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, Ill. In 2013, she moved to Bell Tower Residence in Merrill and joined the small community of sisters living there. Sister was involved in visiting the elderly in their homes and in nursing homes, bringing communion to the sick in their parishes in the Breese area as well as St. Joseph’s Hospital. In her later years she enjoyed yard work and tending to the birds who came to her bird feeder. Preceding her in death were her brothers: Fr. Bernard, Clarence and George; an infant brother, August; parents, Bernard and Hattie, and sistersin- law: Marcella A. Schreiber and Carol Schreiber. She is survived by her family of Holy Cross Sisters and associates, as well as by her brother, Roman Schreiber, Abbotsford, one sister-in-law, Marcella Schreiber, Abbotsford, and many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass for Sister was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, at the Holy Cross Chapel in Bell Tower Residence. Father Charles Hoffmann presided.
