UW-Stevens Point to bring back live theatre and dance performances

Live theater and dance performances will return to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this academic year, bringing two musicals, a drama, an original play, two dance concerts and two staged readings back to audiences at university stages.

UW-Stevens Point’s Department of Theatre and Dance “Back to the Boards” season packages, First Nighters dinner series and individual show tickets are on sale starting Wednesday, Sept. 1. Two different staged readings will be offered during the year at the UW-Stevens Point campuses in Stevens Point, Marshfield and Wausau. Other shows will be held in the UW-Stevens Point Noel Fine Arts Center’s Jenkins and Studio theatres.

“We are eager to welcome you back to our spaces to experience the vibrant energy that only live performance creates – a remarkable shared experience between audience and performer,” said Michael Estanich, department chair.

Performances will include: · “Passage,” Sept. 23-24 at UW-Stevens Point main campus, Sept. 25 at UWSP at Marshfield and Sept. 26 at UWSP at Wausau Staged reading – The play explores relationships among people from different countries and how power imbalances affect personal dynamics.

· “Red Velvet,” Oct. 8-10 and 14-16, UWSP Studio Theatre This drama is set in the Theatre Royal in London in 1833 as a black American actor has been cast in a lead role while the public riots in the streets over the abolition of slavery.

· “Into the Woods,” Nov. 5-7 and 11-13, UWSP Jenkins Theatre Stephen Sondheim’s musical follows fairy tale characters as they cross paths and weave their stories together, making choices and dealing with consequences.

· “Afterimages 2021,” Dec. 3-5, UWSP Jenkins Theatre A student directed, choreographed, performed and designed show of original dance.

· “The Shadow Box,” Feb. 9 at UWSP at Marshfield, Feb. 10-11 at UWSP and Feb. 12 at UWSP at Wausau Staged reading – Three families come to terms with the inevitability of death in this eloquent, humorous and haunting play.

· An original, devised play, March 4-6 and 10-12, TBA The play will be directed and devised by Visiting Assistant Professor Elizabeth Parks with a student ensemble.

· “Cabaret,” April 15-16 and 21-23, UWSP Jenkins Theatre This musical explores the dark and seedy life of 1929 Bohemian Berlin as Germany slowly yields to the sinister emergence of the Third Reich.

· “Danstage 2022,” May 6-8 and 11-13, UWSP Studio Theatre A dance concert featuring new premieres by dance program faculty and guest artists.
