It’s not many kids who would willingly institute a community-wide clean-up, but that’s exactly what the student body did from Cornell High School, over Earth Day. The clean-up was discussed, April 28, at the board of education meeting.
Organized by collaborating advisory groups and the Student Council, the clean-up was loving effort to better the community, by picking up garbage across the city.
“It got a lot of positive feedback from the students and some staff members, as well,” said Student Council member Kyleigh Mercer.
Board treasurer Stephanie Seidlitz questioned if the kids had gloves to wear and was assured they did, but it was up to the individual student on whether or not to wear them. Eileen Sikora, board clerk, suggested looking into getting rubber gloves from local clinics or hospitals.
“You never know what they’re going to pick up,” she said.
Middle/high school principal Craig Braaten agreed there are a few things they want to change the next goround, including investing in some heavy duty garbage bags.
“We learned a lot this year,” said Braaten. It was also reported that the solar panels are up at the high school and once state inspection is done, the school can have the power turned on. The trees that were in that area, have been removed and replanted.
“It’s too wet over there in junk soil,” said superintendent Paul Schley.
Also during the meeting, the board approved the hire of head high school volleyball coach Grace Grunseth; assistant high school volleyball coach Allison Kurth; and middle school head volleyball coach Kaitlyn Kozial.
