Wenzel Named “Fireman of the Year”

Don Wenzel (Tiger), a Stratford fireman, has been chosen by Fire Chief DonWeber to represent the Stratford Fire Department in the first Wisconsin Firefighter of theYear program. Chief Weber and Fireman Wenzel will go to Milwaukee for a tour of the Schlitz Brewery before attending the Brewer-Baltimore game at County Stadium.

Kaiser Takes First

In the Tigers’cross-country opener, Stratford was edged out for team honors with Edgar finishing first. However, Bill Kaiser, Stratford’s crack distance runner, took individual laurels by taking first place in a winning time of 17:38.

Boy Scouts Selling Calendars

Stratford’s area Community Calendars will be sold for the next month by the Stratford Scouts for one dollar. The scouts will sell the calendars door to door and in the schools. Mel Guenther, village president, purchased the first Boy Scout calendar sold in the village from Boy Scouts Tom Becher and David Schaefer. STRATFORD JOURNAL

Mexico trip approved

Junior and senior Spanish students will have the opportunity to travel to Mexico at the end of April. The Stratford School Board approved the trip at its meeting Monday night. The trip will cost each student $1,250 plus bus fare to Chicago.

Four attend VFW national convention

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary met for the national convention in Milwaukee. Attending the convention from the Stratford Post and Auxiliary were Sue Schiferl, Rita Wiesman, and John and Betty Southworth.

Flag presentation

Seventh District Congressman, Dave Obey, was in Edgar to help dedicate the new East Side Apartment building. Obey presented a flag to Dave Myszka, president of the Edgar Housing Authority. East Side Apartments is one of several units built in the area with funds coming from the Farmer’s Home Administration. The building in Edgar has no vacancies.

Teacher award

Mrs. Mary Denk, a substitute teacher at St. Anthony’s Catholic school, Athens, was recently selected as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America. She has taught in the system on a full-time basis for the past five years, and became a substitute teacher this term. Mrs. Denk is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Viegut.

Rail service in county will decrease

Unless conditions change or government acts, rail shipping costs will increase, rail service will decrease and tracks will be abandoned in at least 37 Wisconsin counties, including Marathon. The North, where rails carry pulpwood and lumber, would be severely affected. The report was presented to Gov. Patrick J. Lucey.

Estimate for Edgar school building project rises

The estimated price tag for a preliminary Edgar Public School maintenance/addition proposal has jumped approximately $200,000 to $1,804,200, Seymour Davis Seymour architect told the Edgar Board of Eduction. Half of the increase represented higher construction prices seen in recent bidding and $80,000 from previously unnoticed building code violations.

Closed highway

Water covered CTH H south of the Scotch Creek Bridge in Edgar earlier this week, following heavy storms that dumped approximately four inches of water on the area. The county closed the county road. A swollen Scotch Creek put playground equipment in Scotch Creek Park underwater.
