Healthy Habits

Did you know protecting your brain starts with protecting your heart?
Many people think of diseases of the heart and diseases of the brain to be two separate issues, but in fact, many of the same habits that reduce your heart attack risk, also lower your risk of Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Maintaining your heart and brain health is a two-way street. According to the American Brain Foundation, cardiovascular health is crucial to brain health, as this is where about 20% of our blood supply is pumped. Along with blood, oxygen and other essential nutrients that are used for functions such as memory, problem solving, and focus are pumped to the brain as well. Without a good, strong heart and blood vessels, we start losing the oxygen, nutrients, and blood flow that is essential to brain health.
Ways to help: When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins, or our feel good hormones. This can aid in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, which are known causes of cardiovascular disease. Exercise also increases blood flow to the brain, which is essential to brain health.
Conditions like high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, diabetes and high cholesterol are more likely to develop memory loss, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia later in life. Be sure to keep regular appointments and manage these conditions appropriately. Next, see what you can do to keep your brain healthy and thriving!
