Senior Card Group

The Senior Citizens card group met on June 19 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.

Three games of Sheepshead were played. Andy Hoef won first place and David Perrodin came in second in the first game. Harold Wienke won first and Norbert Lake came in second in the second game. Steve Klockziem took first and Henry Faber came in second in the third game.

Low score was Pat Frank. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.

Mini watercolor art Adults and teens are invited to the Athens Branch Library between July 7-12 to make mini watercolor art. Experiment with vibrant watercolors while you paint a masterpiece on a mini canvas. Canvas, brushes, paints, easels, and even some ideas will be provided. All supplies and instruction will be provided for free. Stop in any time the branch is open throughout the week to participate. For more information, call 715-257-7292.

Book club

The Athens Book Club will meet at the Athens Branch Library on Tuesday, July 8, at 2 p.m. to discuss “Dear Edward” by Ann Napolitano. A 12-year-old lone survivor of a plane crash investigates the stories of his less-fortunate fellow passengers before making a profound discovery about his life purpose in the face of transcendent losses. College notes

Caden Healy, a sophomore majoring in pre-business at Labovitz School of Business & Economic, was named to 2025 spring semester dean’s list at the University of Minnesota in Duluth. Students on the list have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher while earning a minimum of 12 credits.

John Wood was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2025 term at University of Maryland Global Campus. To be eligible for the honor, a student must complete at least six credits during the term, earn a grade-point average of at least 3.5 for the term, and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Eric Bailey was named to the Mississippi State University spring 2025 president’s list. Students on the list achieved a 3.80 or better grade-point average, based on a 4.0 scale, while completing at least 12 semester hours of coursework.

The following students were named to the 2025 spring semester dean’s list at UW-Stout: Abigail Duerr, real estate property management; Mathew Redmann, game design and development-art; Caleb Sarasin, engineering technology. The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.
