25 years ago …


June 21, 2000 – A new gazebo had been constructed in the Granton Community Park by the Gertrude Garbisch family in honor of her 100th birthday that she celebrated earlier in the year. The gazebo was to be dedicated during the 27th annual Granton Park Benefit to be held June 25.
– Craig Kuehn of Granton was to participate in the Down Under Games to be held in Australia July 1-13, representing Wisconsin in a 12-member cross country team. The races in Australia were noted to be different than races in the United States, with low hurdles and water pits as part of the course.
– The Greenwood High School class of 1950 held its 50th class reunion on May 27.
– Several members of the Spencer Special Olympics team competed and placed at the Special Olympics State Games held at Stevens Point. Members of the team who placed were Ken Williams, Wesley Johnson, Tony Petkovsek, Nathan Derks, and Eric Curtis.
June 18, 1980 – The Key to the City of Loyal was presented to Loyal girls softball coach Darrell Laschen after his team won its third consecutive state championship. Nearly 300 people attended the welcome home program following the game.
– The Granton Community Park Benefit picnic was to be held June 29. New additions to the park this year were a ball diamond with lights and a combination concession stand/shelter building being constructed. The new pond had been completed and filled prior to the event as well.
– A family of wild Mallard ducks had taken up residence in the front yard of Mrs. H.R. Baird at 201 S. Andrews Ave. in Greenwood. The mother duck had 12 chicks that had hatched and were reported to all be doing well.
– A Holstein heifer calf named Daisy June had been living in a temporary home at Loyal Foods for the past month. Arnie Bock had purchased the calf to promote June Dairy Month and the calf had been on display at the store every weekend during the month while being tended to by members of the local 4-H. A lucky shopper was to have the chance to win Daisy June as the grand prize of the month.
– Contestants running for Miss Spencerama were Janell Mellenthin, Elaine Caldwell, Sue Beyer, and Renee Andreae.
– On June 22, Zion United Church of Christ in Greenwood was to observe its 75th anniversary.
June 24, 1965 – A special meeting was to be held for the Loyal School Board on June 28. A petition had been circulated and presented to the school board to consider a resolution to change the number of school board members from the present five to a seven-person board. The matter was to be discussed and voted on at the meeting.
– Four 6-ounce cans of tuna were $1.
– The average patient’s hospital stay had been reported to have been cut in half compared to 25 years prior due to better medicines, equipment, and treatment. The average hospital stay in 1935 was 14 days and in 1965 it was 7.7 days.
June 20, 1935 – Seeding of peas by the Loyal Canning Company had been completed, with prospects looking to be the best in the area since 1930. Acreage of peas planted was 850 acres, an increase of 100 acres over the prior year. In addition to peas, 125 acres of beans and 50 acres of beats had been planted.
