ATHENS
Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on May 19 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall.
Two games of Sheepshead were played. Andy Hoef won first place and David Perrodin came in second in the first game. Sally Stubbe won first and Wil Strack came in second in the second game.
Low score was Rick Schaetzl. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
College note
The following students have graduated from UW-Milwaukee: Abraham Miller, earned a bachelor of science degree from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning; and Daniel Zoromski earned a bachelor of science degree from the School of Biomedical Sciences and Health Care Administration.
Maple Grove
The latest meeting of the Maple Grove Governance Board was called to order on April 14 by President Kelly H.
The minutes and The Record-Review article were approved.
Robin H invited board members to the first-grade pancake breakfast on May 8. They were also invited to a program recognizing Maple Grove staff for work they have done in the school forest. The April 22 program was sponsored by UWSP LEAF program.
Autumn N designed the label for the 2025 maple syrup bottles.
Bylaws are being discussed and changed as needed. A new section is done each month.
A summit for charter schools will be held this summer in Oshkosh, with funding provided by a grant.
The Playground Project is on budget and will be inspected when complete. A new fence will be installed in conjunction with this project. Brandon Westfall will be removing the old equipment.
Grant expenses are at 43% for the year, not including the playground. The monies that are left will have to be spent before the end of the year. Members will discuss a list at the May meeting.
Screening and state testing are being done now.
Marketing is going well; numbers are good for a local campaign. Kelly H has worked with Tim to create a flyer saying who the Governance Board is and that new members are being sought.
Robin commented on the maple sap season. It went well and taps are being pulled. Custodian Chris L boiled down some sap on an open pan to show the kids the total process, with free samples of warm syrup.
Maple Grove will be starting a new project after getting two beehives and some boxes from Gary and Maureen Belanger. They will be kept across the road, and six volunteers have offered to be bee apprentices. Students will bottle honey and make some products.
The Bio Blitz was held May 9. Master Gardeners visited the school and planted some milk jug gardens. Using a grant, four apple trees and two pear trees were purchased from Rock Ridge Orchard and planted on the upper playground.
Hsu Growing Supply is donating a portion of the sales of Hsu brand products to Maple Grove Charter School whenever customers indicate that they want it to go to the school.
The tornado drill was completed for the year.
The FOMG budget was approved.
The PTO open house went well, but more tour guides could be needed for next year. The pancake breakfast and the basket faffles went very well.
Maple Grove Foundation Inc commented that they are still doing Kwik Trip cards and more Popcorn Fridays.

Book club
The Athens Book Club will meet at the library on Tuesday, June 10, at 2 p.m. to discuss “Outlawed” by Anna North. The Athens Area Historical Society invites the public to join them in viewing a collection of items from Athens days gone on Friday, June 6, from 5:30-8 p.m., and on Saturday, June 7, from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Athens Fire Department meeting room. This event is free of charge to attend.

Women’s Club
The Edgar Women’s Club held their spring banquet at LC Marathon. Members enjoyed a delicious meal. Door prizes were won by Nanci Schillinger and Sharon Braunel. The traveling prize was won by Julie Reichenbach.
Members discussed the May 15 Bake and Book Sale at the Edgar Village Hall.
Graduating seniors from Edgar High School will receive three scholarships from the Edgar Women’sClub.
The planning committee will meet this summer to put together the projects and meetings booklet for 2025-2026.
Club members will reconvene in September for a potluck dinner at the Edgar Village Hall. New members are welcome.
Plant swap
Plant lovers can swap the old for the new during a free plant swap event, June 2-7, at the Edgar Branch Library. Patrons can take or leave a plant, along with plant care instructions. A table will be set up right outside the library.

MARATHON
Krautkramer birth
A son, Eli Scott, was born to Renee and Scott Krautkramer on May 12, 2025, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He weighed nine pounds, 10 ounces and was 21 inches long.
Legion Auxiliary
President Betty Blume called the May 8 meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Alois Dreikosen, Unit 469 to order. Opening meeting protocol was followed. Opening prayer, minutes from the April meeting, and treasurer’s report were given.
Committee reports
The group currently has 95 members, with another member joining soon. May birthdays were read at the meeting. One member was on sick list this month. There are no new items from Juniors.
Old Business
A thank-you note was received from a participant of the April Honor Flight.
Auxiliary members will be distributing poppies at the post office, R Store, Pizza Market, Green Table, and Marathon Feed on Friday, May 23, and Saturday, May 24. Displays are already up in local bars and restaurants. People will also be able to obtain poppies on Monday at the Memorial Day program at the cemetery as long as supplies last.
At this time, two girls from Marathon will be attending this year’s Badger Girls State being held in June.
Entries for the Patriotic Art Fair will be on display at local businesses during each of the three Concert in the Park events held by the Heritage Center. There will be a Wine Walk in connection with each of the evenings. At the end of the summer, the unit is hoping to take an exhibit to the Highground Veterans Memorial Park. A tip jar will be put at each location to be used for needs related to sponsoring the event.
The YMCA of Chippewa Valley is again seeking support for their Annual Troop Care Package Drive.The unit will be making a donation towards sending care packages.
Closing prayer was given. The next regular meeting will be on Thursday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m., at the village hall.

Stratford Lions Club
At the Stratford Lions Club’s May meeting, members and guests enjoyed refreshments and a meal prepared by the club.
The club honored this year’s Stratford High School Students of the Month, including Emerson Roy, Laney Pankratz, Trygve Ashenbrener, Abbigail Lewerenz, Brooks Vanderhoof and Breleigh Skaya.
The club made the following donations in 2024-2025: $100 to the Wisconsin Lions Mission for hurricane relief; $1,000 to Marathon County United Way; and $2,050 to the following Lions programs: Wisconsin Lion Foundation, Wisconsin Lion Camp, Leader Dog, District Hearing,Vitamin A, Journey for Sight, Eye Bank of Wisconsin, and Pre-K VisionScreening.
The club also sponsored two Stratford High School students to attend Badger Boys/ Girls in 2025.
The club also donated funds to the Stratford Chamber for Music in the Park this summer, and did vision screening for 20 Stratford pre-school children in February.
Three $500 scholarships were awarded to the following Stratford High school graduates: Gavin Cepress, Laney Pankratz and Trenton Cournoyer.
