Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on May 8 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. Alvira Henrichs won first place and Sally Stubbe came in second in the first game. Dale Frank won first and Pat Frank came in second in the second game.
Low score was Tom Ellenbecker. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
College note
Rachel Jaworski has graduated from Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn. with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
Athens History
The Athens Area Historical Society invites the public to join them in viewing a collection of items from Athens days gone on Friday, June 6, by from 5:30-8 p.m., and on Saturday, June 7, from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Athens Fire Department meeting room. This event is free of charge to attend.
Bake and Book Sale
The May 7 meeting of Athens VFW Post 8527 was called to order by Commander Marv Reuter, with 19 members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Several donations were approved by the membership, including $300 to the Athens Lions toward July 4th
Edgar
fireworks; $100 to De Pere VFW Post 2113 for their golf outing, and $100 to the Department of Wisconsin Veterans for the VFW gun raffle.
A thank-you was read for the donation to the Athens post prom.
Rick Schaetzl reported that Memorial Day plans have been finalized to include the Athens High School band and choir. The keynote speaker will be state Rep. Karen Hurd. The program at the community hall will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26. A potluck will be held after flag raising. All are welcome.
The next meeting be will held on Wednesday, June 4.
Attendance prizes were given to: Mike Seliger, Duane Passehl, and Marv Reuter.

EDGAR
College note
Olivia Urmanski and Sarah Olson were named to the president’s list for outstanding academic achievement for the fall 2024 term at Northcentral Technical College. The students enrolled in a postsecondary program, earned a 3.75 grade point average or above and successfully completed a minimum of six credits during the fall term.
Games at St. Stephen
St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 424 N. Third Ave., Edgar, will host card games in the church basement on Wednesday, May 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. Refreshments and snacks will be served. If you need a ride or have questions, call Mark at 715-3485802 or Colleen at 715-571-8277.
Bake and Book Sale
The Edgar Women’s Club will be holding a Bake and Book Sale on Thursday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Edgar Village Hall. Anyone donating books may bring books to the community room and place them on the east table. Bring your own bag to purchase books on a per-bag basis.
Family Story Time
Children of all ages and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Edgar Branch Library for Family Story Times. During this 30-minute program, library staff will read books, sing songs, and offer other literature-based activities. The next Family Story Times will be Tuesday, May 20, from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
MARATHON
Free plant swap
Plant lovers can swap the old for the new during a free plant swap event running until May 17 at the Marathon City Branch Library. Everyone is welcome to take or leave a plant, and plant care instructions are always helpful. A table will be set up right outside the library entrance. College notes
Allyson Zuleger has graduated summa cum laude from Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn. with a bachelor’s degree in special education: academic and behavior strategies. Students graduating summa cum laude have earned a 3.8 grade point average and higher.

Medicare 101
Adults can learn Medicare basics on Thursday, May 22, from 4-5 p.m. at the Stratford Branch Library. This presentation, led by a local life and health insurance agent, will include the difference between Medicare parts, what steps you should take when you turn 65, and answering any questions you may have about Medicare. Like all library programs, this one is noncommercial in nature and for informational purposes only. This event is free and open to all ages, no registration is required. Book club
The Stratford Book Club will meet at the Stratford Branch Library on Wednesday, May 21, at 1 p.m. to discuss “The Berry Pickers” by Amanda Peters. The only child of affluent and protective parents, Norma, troubled by recurring dreams and visions that seem more like memories than imagination, searches for the truth, leading her to the blueberry fields of Maine, where a family secret is finally revealed. Citizens Bank donations
Employees at the Citizen Bank in Stratford donated $255 in charity funds for local food pantries as part of the bank’s held during the Wisconsin Bankers Association (WBA) Power of Community Week, April 21–25. Designed to address a critical need, the food drive saw enthusiastic participation from across six communities and eight branch locations. In total, 269 food items and $1,530 in monetary donations were contributed to local food pantries, helping provide essential supplies to individuals and families in need.

History bus tour
The Marathon County Historical Society will present a unique history bus tour, “It Happened at the Park” on Sunday, May 18 starting at noon. The tour will feature two hours of stories as guests travel to the Wausau parks learning local

The tour starts at noon in the parking lot at Granite Peak and will last approximately two hours. Upon returning to Granite Peak, guests will enjoy an exclusive reception in the Granite Peak chalet. Storytime in the Garden
The Marathon County Historical Society will host its annual “My Dolly and Me: A Garden Party,” on Saturday, June 14 at 1 p.m. Children (and a parent/caregiver) are welcome to bring their dolly or stuffed animal to enjoy treats, stories, and a craft. Children can also introduce their doll/stuffed animal during share time. On display will be historical dolls and vintage toys from our own collections. Plant sale
A plant sale in the village of Unity is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, May 15 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. The sale will be set up in the Unity Memorial Hall, 121 N Madison St., one block west of STH 13.
Donations will be accepted as gardeners thin out their flower gardens or share the bounty of new plants. Donations of any kind of plant, tree, or cutting, indoors or outdoors, annual or perennial, would be appreciated.
