Eight Apartments will be Built Here

At a meeting recently at the court house the Farmers Home Administration obligated a loan in the amount of $710,000 to finance the construction of 40 units of rural renting housing for senior citizens of moderate incomes in Marathon County. Equal numbers of units will be constructed in Athens, Edgar, Mosinee, Spencer and Stratford during the present construction season.

Lions Annual Picnic To Be Held

The Stratford Lions annnual picnic will be held at the Eau Pleine Park. The picnic has been planned by Lion Frank Ellenbecker, chairman, assisted by Lions Lloyd Keller, Tony Drexler, Herman Framberger, Dean Wieland and Dick Schoultz.

Storm Damage

The Stratford area was hit hard by a storm Thursday night that took down many trees, damaged buildings and left many without power. The storm also took down electric poles along STH 153 east of Stratford. The Stratford village crew worked 23 hours straight to get power back. Class of ’64 Holds Ten Year Reunion

The Marathon class of 1964 held their first class reunion at Rib River Ballroom under the theme “The Way We Were.” The evening’s festivities included cocktails, a meal and dancing, featuring the “Odds and Ends.” The master of ceremonies was Ed Pospychalla. The graduating class had 68 students and was the last class to graduate from the old high school building.

Operator needed for bowling alley

Advertising for an operator-manager for the bar and bowling alley in the basement of the Community Hall was authorized by members of the Athens Village Board. A rental of $375 will be charged for the facility which will include all utilities. The contract will be on a one year’s trial basis.

New Marathon Superintendent

Douglas Chickering officially took over the duties of superintendent of the Marathon School District on July 1. J. C. Gillman is retiring but staying on until the annual meeting. Chickering, originally from Hawkins, graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and did his master’s work at Superior. Chickering and his wife, Sharon, have two children, Dawn, 10 and Mark, 5. They live in Marathon.

Park Equipment

The Fergot family recently purchased new playground equipment in memory of their parents, George and Marie Fergot for the Edgar Village Park. The tot equipment includes two horses on springs and a Yogie Bear teeter-totter.

K-12 building preferred

A group of over 60 Athens School District residents agreed to recommend to the Athens Board of Education that the district’s building needs be addressed by remodeling the current high school into a K12 facility. The $7 million option, selected among four alternatives, was the near unanimous pick of eight small groups.

Power Play

Electrician Dave Stetzer and area farmers met at Miltrim Farms, rural Athens, recently to discuss power quality problems on dairy farms. Stetzer also had his portable workshop on site to take electrical readings and videotape the 400-head Miltrim herd in the milking parlor.

1999 – Concert series

The Stratford Community Band kicked off the Evenings in the Park concert series last Wednesday at Klemme Park. The Historical Society served pie while the band performed.

1999 - Well Built

Oz Karlen, Edgar, competes in the antique tractor pull sponsored by the Edgar FFA Alumni. Karlen is driving a 1929 Farmall, the oldest tractor to enter the competition. The tractor is owned by Bud Locher of Rib Mountain. THE RECORD-REVIEW ARCHIVES
