Athens Senior Card Group
The Senior Citizens card group met on May 2 for weekly card playing at the Athens Area Fire and Ambulance Hall. Two games of Sheepshead were played. David Perrodin won first place and Steve Klockziem came in second in the first game. Steve Schaetzl won first and Pat Frank came in second in the second game.
Low score went to Sally Stubbe. Newcomers are encouraged to come play Sheepshead every Thursday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Athens fire hall.
VFW Post 8257
The monthly meeting of Athens VFW Post 8527 was held May 1. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by the 11 members in attendance.
A $100 donation was made to the upcoming Marathon County Law Enforcement Ceremony hosted by the Village of Athens Police Department. A $100 donation was also made to the upcoming Trinity Lutheran Church Youth cancer walk.
Announcement was made of this year’s Memorial Day program on May 27 beginning at 8 a.m. at the village square. All are invited to join the area veterans.
Attendance door prizes were given to Rick Schaetzl, Marv Reuter and Melissa Gilles.
The next monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 5, at 7 p.m. at the fire hall back room. New members are always welcome.
Book club
The Athens Book Club will meet at the Athens Branch Library on Tuesday, May 14, at 2 p.m. to discuss “A Flicker in the Dark” by Stacy Willingham. Incidents 20 years apart in which girls go missing rattles a Louisiana woman. Call 715-257-729 for more information.
Board game night
All ages are welcome at a monthly board game night at the Athens Branch Library, 203 Alfred St. Games will be available to choose from and participants are welcome to bring in their own games to play. The Edgar Book Club will meet on Tuesday, May 14, at noon to discuss “Still Alice” by Lisa Genova, which tells the story of a Harvard professor who grapples with her diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Call 715-352-3155 for more information.

Bake and Book Sale
The Edgar Womens Club will hold a Bake and Book Sale on Thursday, May 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Edgar Village Hall. Donations of books may be brought and put in community room on side table. Proceeds go to Edgar High Schoo scholarships.
M arathon Book club
The Marathon City Book Club will meet on Monday, May 13, at 5:45 p.m. at the Marathon Branch Library to discuss “The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio” by Terry Ryan. The novel is about a mom in the 1950s who enters a variety of contests to keep her family afloat financially. New members are always welcome; stop at the library to pick up your copy. Lions Club River Float
The Marathon Lions Club will host their Third Annual River Float on Saturday, June 8. Online registration runs from May 1-26. Visit Marathon Lions Club #10539 Facebook page for the link to register. Once online registration closes, registration will only be available on the day of the float, which is June 8, from 9 a.m. to noon in Rib Falls.
Attendees will drop their canoes, kayaks or inner tubes off in Rib Falls at the check-in site and then proceed to Lions Park in Marathon where transportation will be provided back to Rib Falls. The float begins at 10 a.m. with the last drop off at 1 p.m.
Food will be provided for all registered participants at Arrow Tap in Marathon from noon to 4:30 p.m. Send any questions by message via Facebook page.
