The Stratford Journal 50 years ago... thursday, May 29, 1974 VFW Scholarships The recipient of the VFW scholarship is Jerry Leick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Leick. The recipient of the VFW Auxiliary scholarship is Peggy Leonhardt, daughter of John Leonhardt. Their awards are based on leadership, citizenship and scholarship.

Staff Named for 1975 Stratavarian The 1974-75 Stratavarian staff will be headed by returning editors Joyce Grassland and Cheryl Ulrich. The yearbook staff is advised by Ms. Cynthia Valitchka, language arts teacher. 25 years ago... wednesday, June 2, 1999 State-bound Stratford will send three individuals and two relay teams to the WIAA State Track and Field Tournament in La Crosse.

For the girls, Shannon Heeg qualified for the 100m high hurdles. On the boys side, Stratford will have two relays competing – the 4x100m and the 4x400m. Running for Stratford relays, and alternates, are Andy Weigel, Tate Galvin, Craig Moeller, Joey Drexler, Andrew Rock, Jesse Kohlbeck, Charlie Duerr, Dustin Kincaid, and Aaron Hamus. Galvin will also be competing in both the high jump and the 110m high hurdles. Rock will also be competing in the 110m high hurdles, long jump, and 300m intermediate hurdles. The Marathon Journal 50 years ago... thursday, May 29, 1974 Rib Riders Thank Landowners The 2nd Annual landowners party was held May 23 at Poplar Tree Ballroom. This party is a “thank you” from the Rib River Club to all landowners who let us place our snowmobile trails through their land. Horseshoe Club Show The Athens Golden Horseshoe club annual horse show is to be held on June 2. The show grounds are on county trunk NN next to the ball park in Marathon City. Judge Paul Becker will judge the horses by the N.C.W.H.A. rules.

The Record-Review 50 years ago... thursday, May 30, 1974 Mother Honored Mrs. Ottilie Burger was honored as “Mother of the Year” at the Catholic Order of Foresters St. Margaret’s Court 1074 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Athens. Her children include Sylvia David, George David, Joseph Burger, Cecilia Johnson, Christine Schaefer, Marie Ellenbecker, Theresa David and Agnes Gianoli. Construction Starts Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new St. Matthew’s Lutheran church, Marathon, were held recently and construction has started on the west side of town for the 8,400 square feet structure. The facility is to be located directly east of the present church and include a dining hall, kitchen, office, rest rooms, meeting room and the church proper. Butler Steel is the contractor.

Music Awards Jill Emenecker and Rick Witucki won top music honors at Athens High School this year. Jill received the National School Choral award and Rick won the John Philip Sousa band award. Jill and Rick were chosen by members of the band and chorus for their valuable contributions to choir and band. 25 years ago... wednesday, June 2, 1999 Two teachers retire at St. Mary’s School After 47 years of teaching, Sister Mary Ann Weisman celebrated her retirement amongst friends and faculty. During her career Sr. Mary Ann has taught over 1,400 students in 12 different schools.

St. Mary’s also said their farewells to fellow staff member Bernadine Heindl, a first grade tacher known for her smile and jacket zipping skills, who has decided to make a career change Pumped up Athens resident Shawn Myszka, 19, took first place in the Men’s Lightweight Open class and second place in the Teen Overall at the 1999 NPC Mr. Wisconsin State Bodybuilding Championships held in West Allis. He gives his brother Alan Myszka, who is a state record holder in bench press, the credit for his success.

1974All-Conference

Three Bluejay baseball players were named to the Marawood All-Conference team last week. Matt Viegut, Jay Ellenbecker and Dave Saindon received the honor. Jay and Matt are juniors, Dave graduated this year. Honorable mention selections in the Record-Review area went to Larry Heindl, Marathon, Mike Wagner, Edgar and Billy Blake, Athens.

1999 – Doppler 7 comes to Marathon

The Keith Langenhahn Farm, Marathon, recently was fitted with the latest in Doppler equipment from WSAU Channel 7 weather, May 28. Doppler uses radar to accurately predict weather conditions in the area. THE RECORD-REVIEW ARCHIVES
