My name is Saskatoon Damm, and I am interning at The Star News this summer. I am excited to cover news in the community and gain reporting experience.

I grew up in Medford and went to high school at MASH. My favorite classes there were AP Literature and AP History. Outside of academics, I participated in tennis and the philosophy club. I also worked at Aspirus Hospital, Francis L. Simek Memorial Library, Damm Financial Tax and Accounting, and a dairy farm.

Next fall, I will be a sophomore at UWMadison. I study English literature and am exploring a second major in economics. My first year of college was a great experience. The best part was being in a club called Manhole Sketch Comedy. The club writes and performs 3-5 minute sketches similar to Saturday Night Live. Most of the sketches I wrote were inspired by Medford. For example, I wrote a sketch in memoriam of Kmart, which used to be located in the Medford Plaza.

In my free time, I enjoy watching sports. I am a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Over half of my shirts are Pittsburgh Steelers related. My favorite player is T.J. Watt, who is from Wisconsin and played for the Badgers. His post-game interviews are unique because he is one of the few NFL players who speaks with a Wisconsin accent. Aside from sports, I listen to music and play guitar. I was the bassist in a rock band called DOROTHE and played gigs around Medford. I like a variety of music, but rock is my favorite genre.

This summer, I look forward to covering the Dairy Section in the paper. I grew up on a farm and worked for a local dairy farm that milked 100 cows. While I do not plan to be a farmer, my time working as a farmhand made me appreciate the process of farming. Farming is difficult labor and goes unrecognized for its importance. In the midst of hard work, there is a unique connection between the farmer, the land, and the animals. More than just a job, farming requires an understanding of our reliance on nature. I am excited to explore the directions local farmers are taking to promote a sustainable future.
