Golf battles through gauntlet of reglar season courses

The Colby golf team had a full schedule of meets over the last two weeks, battling their way against conference foes and non-conference area opponents alike on a number of different courses ahead of the Cloverbelt conference meet and the WIAA playoffs.
In the two 18-hole competitions last week, the Hornets placed eighth at RiverEdge Golf Course in Marshfield out of 11 teams and then took 11th out of thirteen teams at Whispering Pines Golf Course in Cadott. They finished with a final team score of 414 at the former and a score of 403 at the latter. Bloomer won both meets by significant margins.
At Marshfield, Gavin Voss put together the Hornet’s best performance on the course, the junior tying for 13th with a score of 92. Brody Viegut was seven strokes behind with a score of 99, earning himself 22nd.
Braiden Johnson scored a 106 to take 31st while Hunter Reynolds rounded out the varsity squad’s scorers with a final score of 117. He took 42nd. Jacob Hoppe was 46th with a score of 129. Bloomer’s Connor Gould took first place, shooting for par to claim the top spot.
At the Stanley-Boyd Invitational at Whispering Pines, Viegut posted Colby’s best result, coming out of the regular par-72 course with a final score of 96, placing him solidly in the middle of the pack and earning him 39th place.
Gavin Voss finished four strokes behind Viegut, ending the day with an even 100 to finish in 44th. Teammate Braiden Johnson was not far behind, taking 47th. Reynolds ended the day as the Hornets final scorer, taking 60th with a score of 106 and Hoppe rounded out the squad with a score of 113, giving him 69th.
The team had their highest team finish in a nine-hole competition at the Marshfield Country Club. Viegut led the way for Colby, putting up one his best scores of the year, finishing the course in 47 strokes. The performance earned him third place overall at the meet, trailing only Neillsville’s Tucker Johnson and Columbus Catholic’s Charlie Moore.
It also helped the co-op tie Neillsville for third at the meet with a team score of 215. Columbus took first with 194 and Stanley-Boyd placed second with a team score of 204.
Gavin Voss and Braiden Johnson also had solid days on the course in Marshfield. The former came through with a score of 52, tying for ninth, while the latter took 16th overall with a final score of 55.
Hoppe and Ivan Haemer rounded out Colby’s varsity squad with Hoppe scoring a 61 and Haemer one stroke behind, shooting a 62. They finished 22nd and 25th respectively.
The Hornets finished one stroke better as a team at the nine-hole meet held at Neillsville Country Club held on Thursday, but home-squad Neillsville and Owen-Withee were able to pass them up.
Voss had one of his best days of the year, tying with Columbus Catholic’s Kaleb Hilgemann for third place by shooting a 46. Braiden Johnson also had a very solid showing, tying with four other athletes for seventh place with a score of 49. Viegut took 21st with a score of 57, Hunter Reynolds placed 25th, shooting a 62, Jacob Hoppe was 28th with a 64.
